Over the past decade, there has been a shift in the practice of urology toward a more “offi ce”-based service. Depending on the type of practice one has, up to 80% of urological surgery can be dealt with on an ambulatory day-case basis, either in the hospital or in the offi ce, with emphasis on diagnostic and minor or intermediate surgical procedures. Major urological surgery is becoming con- centrated in only relatively few centers in every country. This handbook of offi ce urological procedures deals in an orderly fashion with the common core urological procedures that every urologist needs to be competent at doing, as they form the “bread-and-butter” of urological practice. The book is divided into 31 chapters with illustrations to illustrate the practical procedures encountered in daily urological practice. These proce- dures are often “submerged” in the large textbooks by the specialized discus- sions on topics like prostate cancer. However, being a pocket-sized book, the handbook can be carried around easily by trainees. I congratulate the authors on their hard work in producing a book which will help to educate physicians and improve patient care. Alan J. Wein, MD, PhD (Hon) University of Pennsylvania Health System Philadelphia, PA, USA Preface Time constraints on the undergraduate curriculum and changes in patients’ attitudes have resulted in medical students and doctors-in-training receiving reduced formal teaching and acquiring fewer practical skills than their prede- cessors. This can mean that many doctors have very limited experience of even the common diagnostic tests and surgical procedures that they are likely to encounter in their day-to-day practice as trainees. For the doctor expected to perform urological procedures with which he or she has had limited experi- ence, this book will be an invaluable source of information and advice. The procedures in this book are often embedded in larger operative text- books that are diffi cult to carry around. These larger textbooks also cover all aspects of urological surgery, some of which, such as radical prostatectomy, are useful to know about, but are usually performed in specialist centers and not on a regular basis by general “core/offi ce” urologists. This book provides a practical and comprehensive summary of the most common “offi ce” urological procedures in a form that is concise, relevant, readily available, and easily carried around. The chapters are organized in an orderly fashion, starting with the equipment used by urologists. This is fol- lowed by operative and investigative procedures of the genitalia and ends with procedures on the upper urinary tract. The book was written with urological trainees in mind but we hope it would also be useful for medical students, general surgical trainees, and general practitioners with a special interest in urology as well as practicing urologists. Hashim Hashim Bristol, UK 2008 Acknowledgments We are grateful for all those who helped us to produce this book, especially the medical equipment companies including Laborie, Olympus, Karl-Storz, Cook, Bard, and Coloplast who provided illustrations for the book. We would also like to thank Alice Chen for drawing the illustrations. Hashim Hashim Paul Abrams Roger Dmochowski Contents Foreword by Alan J.
