Thisgenushasbeenrepresentedbymore thanonehundredspecies.AnoutlineofthegenuswasdelineatedbyNooNANin1985. IntheJapaneseIslands,thisgenusisoneofthemostimportantharpalinegenera, sinceit includesthespecieswith reducedhindwings,whicharemuch localizedin mountainousareas.Besides,theyareverycloselysimilar tooneanothernotonly in theirexternalmorphologybutalsoingenitalicfeatures,makingitquitedifficulttode- termine them. Needlesstosay,thefirstspeciesofthisgroupknowntoscienceisTrichotichnus 1eptopus(BATES),originallydescribedin1883 fromNikko,Central Japan. Itwasre- describedbyHABU(l961,p.150)inhisrevisionalstudyofthegenusTrichotichnus, but his careful account wasbasedon elevenspecimens from five localities, oneof whichwassent toLondonandwascomparedbyBRITToNwith thetypeofT leptopus. Unfortunately, therewasagrave fault intheprocedure for identificationofHABUs' specimen,sincethedirectcomparativestudywasbasedonlyontheir external mor- phology.ThesameviewwasstillheldbyHABUin1973,whenamonographofharpa- 1inecarabidswaspublished.A量or thispioneerwork,thesameauthoraddedonenew species,Tkasaharai fromCentralJapan. Morethantenyearsago,KAsAHARAredescribedTyukihiko1andT leptopus,and theircollectingdatawereshown.At thattime, Ihadanimpressionthatthelattercon- 522 SeijiMORITA sistedofat least four differentspeciesbasedon theextremely variablecharactersin theirbodysizeandtheshapeofaedeagus.Inthepast fewyears,KAsAHARAdescribed severalnewspecies fromCentralJapan.Recently,KAsAHARAand ITOdescribedtwo morenewspecies fromShikoku.Sinceall ofthemareboth taxonomicallyandgeo- graphically remote fromT leptopus, thesespeciesarevail eventhough their own view of T leptopus was basedonHABU's inadequate treatment. Last year,several speciesmainlyrelatedtoTpacifcatoriusHABUweredescribedbyN.ITO.Inmyopin- ion,itisprematuretostudythegroupofTleptopusfromWestJapanwithoutacritical studyofall theknownmembersofthisgroup fromCentralandNorthJapan.Afterall, taxonomyof theJapanesemembersofT leptopusisnotwellworkedout, thougha totaloftwelvespecieshavebeendescribedsinceHABU'smonograph. Toundertake、thistask, Ihavetogivea full redescriptionofT leptopusandto bringitstruesystematicpositiontolight.Then,twentynewspeciesandnineteenhith- ertoknownspecieswillbereported. Materials Thisstudy is basedonexaminationofapproximately 800specimens. Most of themwerecollectedby friendsofmineandbymyself. Thetypespecimens ofTli-l- chotlchnus lept〔)pus borrowed from the Natural History Museum, London. were HABU'sspecimenswerestudiedin theNational Instituteof Agro-environmenta1Sci- ences,Tsukuba.Forcomparison,specimensfromKoreaandPrimorskijTerritorywere offeredfromDr.IMURAandMr.AKITA,respectively. Method SincethemembersofthegroupofT leptopusaremoderatelylarge,itisrelatively easy toremove thegenitaliaofa thoroughly relaxedspecimen.Whenseparating the parameres fromtheaedeagus,acarefuloperationisrequirecしsincetheproximalpart ofaedeagus istransparentand fragile. Inorder tostudystructureof thecopulatory piece,thedorsalmembraneouspartshouldbecutopenfromtheproximalparttothe apicalorificewithasharppinandtheinnersacistakenout. Onlywhenthecopulatorypieceisremoved fromtheinnersacandmountedona slidewitha fewdropsoflacticacid, itsdetailedstructurecanbeobserved. Aftera carefulexaminationanddrawing,thegenitaliaarepreservedinindividualvialsin70% alcohol. Pronotumtransverse; apical marginemarginateor almoststraight; apicalanglesalittleproducedand roundedat thetips;sidesarcuate,convergent to- wardsbase,andthenweaklysinuatebeforehindangles,whicharedentate,sharpora littleproducedlaterally;basal foveaeshallowtodeep,andwithcoarsepunctures;me- dianlineclearlyimpressed;basealmoststraight,orslightlyemarginateatmedianpart andslightlyobliquejustinsidehindangles,andborderedthroughout;surfacedensely andcoarselypunctate,thoughminutelysoonthediscandalmostobsoletealongapical marginandmedianline;microsculpturecomposedofwideortransversemeshes. Thepronotum ismutuallysimilar tospeciesbelongingtothesamecomplexso thatslightdifferencescannotbeexpressedbythestandardratiosofparts. Hind、、,ings. Thestateofreductionofhindwings isoneofthemost important charactersforseparatingcomplexes.SofarasIamaware,itisalmostconstantwithin aspecies. Elytra. Elytraoval, ovate,elongatedoval,orelongatedovate,moderatelycon- vex,andwidestataboutmiddleoralittlebehindmiddle;sidesgentlyornarrowlyar- cuate,andslightlysinuatebeforeapices; intervalsslightlyconvexto flat;striaeim- punctate;basalborderweaklycurvedoralmoststraight;interval3withadorsalpore, adjoiningstria2;marginalseriesvariableinthenumberofpores. Theshapeofelytragivesanimportantclueforseparatingcomplexes. Malegenitalo・fgan. Aedeaguselongate;basalpartlargeandtransparent; right wallhigherthantheleft;apicalmarginofmembraneousdorsalpartsimplytowidely roundeli, or slightly emarginate at apex in dorsal view; apical lobemoderately to strongly produce andalmoststraightor inclinedto theright indorsal view; apex thickorborderedabove,sometimesinterruptedatmiddleindorsalview;viewedven- trally,apexalmostflat,thick,orborderedatthesidesandnotchedatmiddle. Malegenitaliaserveasoneof themostimportantcharacteristics for identifica- tion.However,dorsalmarginoftheaedeagusisusuallyslightlyreducedindriedspeci- mens(cf.Figs 6a,12c). Structu1-eofaedeagus. Innersaccoveredwithscalesandarmedwithacopula- torypiece,andsometimeswithamatofspinulesnear thebasal partofcopulatory piece;copulatorypiecevariableinsizeandshapewithinasinglepopulation,andhol- lowandopenat thebase. (Thiswasobservedunderamagnificationofatleast100di- ameters) Ifthecopulatorypieceislargeinsize,it furnishesanimportantcluefor identifi- cation. Unfortunately,recentauthorsincludingmyselfhavenotbeenabletoshow relia- bility of both external and genitalic characters for separatingspecies. Of the 72 fromthetypelocality, twospecimenshaveanadditional lateralsetaononesideofpronotum.Fivespecimenshavenodorsalporeontheelytra. Elevenspecimenshaveanordinaryporeononesideoftheelytra. 0nlyaspecimenhas anordinaryporeoninterval IIIoftheleftelytron.Asfor thechaetotaxyoftheanal stemite,onlythreespecimensbearanadditionalsetaononeside. ThespecimensfromMt.Kita-dakeareslightlydifferent fromthetypeseries:the elytraarewider,EL/EW 142-1.48(M I45) in3 ,and the legsare lighter. 0ther standardratiosoftheirbodypartsareincludedwithintherangesofthoseinthetype series. 0nly a single specimen from Mt.
