Taking up the game at the relatively late age of 16, I knew very quickly that the game of golf—specifically the teaching of it—would be my life’s work. I needed to make up ground quickly, learn as much as I could, and digest the intricacies of the sport in order to bring me up to speed with my peers. I did this largely through golf books; with five books on the golf swing, three books on course design, and a number of autobiographies of the best players, I started to compile quite a library. However, what I actually needed was a golf book such as the one you presently have in your hands. The Golf Book is just that, a celebration of everything that is commendable, exciting, and worthwhile knowing in the sport of golf. This book distills a collective global knowledge of golf and binds it into one comprehensive document; it cuts to the chase with its information and presents essential text and images. This book would have saved me a considerable amount of time and much shelf space in my bedroom. Like any new activity that one may take up, there is always that fragile gap between learning the basics and developing enough competency to then enjoy the activity itself. This is where golf is unique—there are so many aspects to the sport that a “trial and error” process may be timely. The Golf Book cuts through that trial and error, giving the reader the essential, important, and usable information associated with every department of this great game. With “state of the art” presentation, the information is easily absorbed and remembered, making the process of reading this book light but extremely informative. PLAYING THE GAME Steve Newell, with whom I have worked on numerous occasions, expertly delivers the section on the golf swing, short game, and strategy. The photography and the art direction during this chapter leave nothing to the imagination, as its content gives the reader a concise and common-sense assessment of golf technique. In addition to the fundamental motion of the golf swing, there is also detailed advice on the short game and sloping lies—something we all face whenever we play. There are subtle yet important adjustments to be made when changing from club to club through the bag, and this subject, along with UUSS__001100--001133__IInnttrroodduuccttiioonn..iinndddd 1100 0044//0055//2211 55::4400 PPMM
