Many colleagues and students discussed the themes of the book with me including Phil Cerny, Frank Fischer, Maurie Cohen, Wendy Godek at Rutgers/NJIT, faculty and students at Kassel, Oxford Brookes and Crete universities where I presented part of the research, Tim Forsyth, Ronnie Lipschutz, Dimitris Stevis, Maria Kousis, Valerie Assetto, Pam Shaw, Helen Schwenken, Christoph Scherrer. Panos Yanna- kogeorgos and Wendy Godek provided invaluable research assistance. Rutgers University and Kassel University provided grants to conduct the field studies while Tim Forsyth at DESTIN at the London School of Economics (LSE) invited me as Academic Visitor for the spring term 2008, giving me access to the LSE library. I would also like to thank the anonymous reviewers of the book manuscript for their useful comments. In Greece, I am indebted to the many civil servants, civil society rep- resentatives, lawyers and local business owners who were so generous with their time and information. For privacy reasons I cannot list them by name but you know who you are. More than anything I owe grati- tude to Lily Venizelos whose energy, commitment and dedication leave me in awe and who has been enormously helpful and supportive. Oliver Rackham, Kostas Andriotis, Mark Mazower, Dimitrios Theodossopoulos, Karin Berthold and Nikos Perakis helped with references, pieces of information and sources. But most of all I need to thank my son Nicolas for being such a patient “research assistant” and traveler. He spent the first 14 months of his life on the road with me in four countries, adapted easily from location to location and opened many hearts and doors in Greece with his enthusiasm for life. He has come away from it all with a passion for British children’s literature, the sea, turtles, Greek music and cheese pie. This book is dedicated to him and my father who spent half his life in Greece and inspired in me my interest in the environment as well as Greece. During the writing of this book my father died and my son was born within three weeks of each other and both have shaped this book in many ways. viii List of Abbreviations CAMP Coastal Area Management Programme DG Directorate General EC European Community EIA environmental impact assessment ERDF European Regional Development Fund EU European Union FFF Forum for the Future FT Financial Times GDP/GNP Gross Domestic Product/Gross National Product GEP Global Environmental Politics GG Global Governance GPE Global Political Economy IR International Relations ISA Internal Security Act LDCs Less Developed Countries LSE London School of Economics Medpol marine pollution assessment and control component of MAP MFTA Mediterranean Free Trade Area MAP Mediterranean Action Plan NGO Non-governmental organization OECD Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development PASOK Greek Socialist party TUI Touristik Union International UNEP United Nations Environment Programme WWF World Wildlife Fund WTO World Trade Organization ix
