We have been collaborating for over 20 years. At one time we naively hoped to have it both complete and free from errors. Experience made it clear, however, that this would be impossible. All genealogies have errors and omissions, and we are no exception. Since both of us are over eighty, we considered it prudent to publish what has been learned thus far, to insure that these years of work would not be lost when one or both of us die. It is hoped that readers will appreciate the information presented, and forgive us the errors and omissions. This work was created in the following manner. Working independently, both authors first established their own direct lines. Then, for many years, all possible records that contained the name "Giddings" were collected and stored in file cabinets. About twenty years ago, with the aid of computer programs, these records were gone over, identified, correlated, and arranged into families. SOURCES Sources consulted are far too numerous to footnote in detail. Minot S. GIDDINGS book, THE GIDDINGS FAMILY, published in 1882, was of course the starting point. This vital book is cited herein simply as "Minot" in both the text and in footnotes. While it is frequently criticized as inadequate, it is still a noteworthy achievement. We hope that we have corrected many of Minot’s errors without belittling his achievement. We also hope that some future member of the family will correct some of our errors and omissions as we have corrected Minot’s. Unfortunately, some of Minot’s errors have made their way into the IGI and thus are being perpetuated. GIDDINGS IN AMERICA Every kind of record available was consulted. This includes, but is not limited to: Ancestral File, Family History Library, cited as "AF" Census Reports, both Federal and State Local Vital Records, cited as 'VRs" The International Genealogical Index, Family History Library, cited as "IGI" Published Family Genealogies/Histories Correspondence with Giddings descendants and relatives Local Histories Social Security Death Records Military Records Newspaper notices, articles, and obituaries Barbour Collection of Connecticut VRs, cited as "Barbour" Hale Collection of Connecticut Deaths cited as "Hale" Genealogical societies, journals, and publications Probate records Internet: World Wide Web, genealogical bulletin boards, news groups, etc. Both authors have made numerous trips to New England, the mid-West, and elsewhere, to visit local libraries, genealogical societies, archival sources, cemeteries, libraries, and so forth. The Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, and Family History Centers of the LDS Church, especially at Mesa, AZ, and Fort Collins, CO, have been visited frequently and used extensively. They are an invaluable resource. GIDDINGS IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS (GIDID) The Giddings Identification Numbers used herein serve to identify, with a unique number, each member of the family who has been identified and properly located in the family tree. These numbers are more than random numbers, but are so constructed as vi
