I was reminded of the importance of The Georgian during a heartbreaking call I had with a former parent a couple of weeks ago, on the same day as we were celebrating our grade 8 and grade 12 graduations. This mother was calling the school to confirm some details as she was preparing the obituary for her son who had tragically passed away from illness at the age of 57. Her son, John, was a member of the class of 1979 and, as we spoke, I pulled that issue of The Georgian from the bookshelf behind my desk. I found her son's photograph and, as it turned out, I remembered him, even though I was a student in grade 6 the year he graduated. As I looked through the pages and started naming some of John's classmates and teachers, she added her own names. Boys who had been friends of John's, boys who had been to their home, teachers who had been particularly inspiring. Their names seem to fill in the lines as she tried, in her grief, to pull together all the pieces of her son's life. Back in February I spoke in Chapel about the importance of names. I shared my belief that names are so important, "We honour others by using their name, by saying their name, by asking them their name, and by saying it properly." This book is a record of our year together. It mirrors the day-to-day life of our College during a school year. It is also a record of the names of those with whom we shared our days. As I do with every issue, I shall cherish this book. My thanks to everyone in our community for another memorable year at our wonderful College. My thanks to my colleagues for challenging and inspiring each boy to continue his journey toward the best version of himself. My thanks to Mr. Hutton for his ongoing commitment to the important task of editing and publishing the yearbook. Finally, my thanks and congratulations to the Class of 2017 for your leadership of the College. You have raised the banner high. Long Live RSGC!
