Mountain2 Over the past 500 years, North America has been the site of ongoing mixing of Native Americans, European settlers, and Africans (broughtlargelybythetrans-Atlanticslavetrade),shapingtheearlyhistoryofwhatbecametheUnitedStates.Westudiedthegenetic ancestryof5,269self-describedAfricanAmericans,8,663Latinos,and148,789EuropeanAmericanswhoare23andMecustomersand showthatthelegacyofthesehistoricalinteractionsisvisibleinthegeneticancestryofpresent-dayAmericans.Wedocumentpervasive mixedancestryandasymmetricalmaleandfemaleancestrycontributionsinallgroupsstudied.Weshowthatregionalancestrydiffer- encesreflecthistoricalevents,suchasearlySpanishcolonization,wavesofimmigrationfrommanyregionsofEurope,andforcedrelo- cationofNativeAmericanswithintheUS.Thisstudyshedslightonthefine-scaledifferencesinancestrywithinandacrosstheUnited Statesandinformsourunderstandingoftherelationshipbetweenracialandethnicidentitiesandgeneticancestry.
