This was bound to raise a few hackles and duly did so. A prompt review in The Journal of Management Studies by V. N. Balasubramanyam began: 'Buckley and Casson have no patience with orthodoxy' (p. 307), and cast some doubt about the book's claim to originality. The claims to originality and generality despite the books' being 'both rigorously and vigorously argued' were judged not to have been fully met by Stephen Kobrin (1977, p. 137). Rugman, later to become a champion of internalisation as an approach to the analysis of multinational firms, felt that the claim to have developed a general theory of the multinational enterprise 'is not entirely unjustified and their book may well come to be accepted as the definitive synthesis on the motives for foreign direct investment' (1977, p.410). The first public airings of the concepts underlying the book were at a staff seminar of the Department of Economics at Reading and the Annual Meeting of the UK Region of the Academy of International Business (AlB), also at Reading, in May 1975. At the AlB meeting the paper was described as 'the lightning rod of the conference' by Bob Hawkins. The concepts were then presented at the Academy of International Busi ness's Conference at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France in July 1975, a paper which was published as 'A Theory of International Operations' (1978). In general, initial response was enthusiastic, but cautious. Since then, the book has been widely cited as a basic source
