We therefore have little understandingofthesufferingsofthousandsofchildren in our communities. The study on which this book is based wasconcerned with 115children oneor both of whose parents are alcoholic, and the purpose of the book is to Rromote increased understanding of such children. The author, Margaret Cork, is a socialworker with 15 years' experience as a clinician in the field of alcoholism.Manyunanswered questionsprompted her to undertake thisstudy. Is thealcoholicsolelyrespons- ible for the breakdown of his family life? Are his children more severely damaged than those in other troubled homes? Is harm to his children related more closely to drinking or to the quality of the relationship between the alcoholic and his wife? Should the family as a whole be treated? Would this produce a more complete r~covery for the alcoholic? Would it produce a lower rate of alcoholism, later on, in his childr~n? Where the alcoholic and his wiferefuse outside help, is there any way in which assistance can be given separ- atelyto their children? The language of this book has purposely been kept straightforward and non-technical.. Although it is basically a research report, it is not intended for' a research or specialist audience. Its style, rather, repre- sents an attempt to communicate directly with all who are interested in children - physicians~nurses, psycho- logists, teachers, social workers, and members of the general public. It is hoped that with increased under- standing there may come gre&terefforts to help those who are, all too often, the forgotten children. H.
