TRANSLATOR'S NOTE
Six translations of Machiavelli's History of Florence
being already in existence, it may seem superfluous to
offer a seventh to the English reader. Without dis-
paraging the merits of other versions, I may claim
this advantage for mine, that by accepting the division
of each Book into numbered sections, as followed in
recent editions of the Italian text, it affords facility of
reference to, or from, the original.
