In the actual novel the war hero is returning from World War II — he has been brutalized by the war — but the infiltrators that he finds are right wing infiltrators fighting to destroy labor. As it says on the rear cover blurb: "when Eaton went off to war, Clark J. Baker Associates was a nationally known and respected public - opinion poll that he and Clark had built up from an idea. Now Eaton was coming home, a wounded war hero, stopping in Washington to sell his interest in the business. But Clark was not there. Clark was dead they told him. Hadn't he known? No, he hadn't. With six months of his life blacked out, he couldn't be sure. Of one thing, however, he began to be terrifyingly sure. The men who had taken over were turning Clark J. Baker Associates into a ruthless propaganda machine. When he saw how they were weighing the Pont Dulac questionnaire against labor, when he met the people who were being trained to spread insidious rumors, he wanted to run away. but there was Elizabeth, who had known terror before. So he stayed — to be involved in a web of scheming violence."
