WilliamsassumesthedutiesofthePrincipaloftheStateColoredNormalSchoolafter PresidentGroverClevelandappointsDr.E.E.SmithtothepostofMinisterResidentofLiberia. Mem- bersoftheWilliamsfamily(picturedabove)wereallgraduatesoftheStateNormalSchoolinthe1880"s. Dr. E. E. Smith returns to Fayetteville as Principal ofthe State Colored Normal > School. Priortothis,heorganizesthefirstnewspaperforBlackNorthCarolinians,the CarolinaEnterprise,inGoldsboro. 1898 ReverendL. E. Fairlycarriesonthe workofDrSmithwholeavestoserve intheSpanish-AmericanWar. After25 yearsattheHowardSchool.StateNor- malSchoolmovestoAshleyHeights, onemilewestofitsfirsthome,whereit remainsforonlyfouryearsandthen movesback tothecitywhereclasses areconductedinarentedlodgehallon WorthStreet. Dr.Smithreturnstohisdutiesin 1899. DuringDr.Smith'slonganddistin- guishedtenure,theinstitutionmovestoitspermanentsiteonMurchisonRoadin 1907. Later.Dr.Smithandhiswifedeedadditionallandtothestatetobringthe institution'sholdingto92acres. Thecampusgrowstoeightbuildingsandsev- eralcottages. 1929 In1908,thefirstbrickbuilding,AycockHall,isconstucted. Following,in1916and1921,theInstitution's namechangestotheStateColoredNormalandIndustrialSchoolandtheStateNormalSchoolforthe NegroRacebeforechangingtotheStateNormalSchoolin1926.The titleofPrincipalchangestoPresi- dentin1927,andallhighschoolworkdiscontinuesin1929. Dr.E.E.SmithretiresonJune30.1933andiselectedPresidentEmeritus. Dr.J.Ward Seabrook.whoservedasDeanforsevenyears,iselectedthenewPresident. 1939 Under the able leadership ofDr. Seabrook. theinstitutionbecomesafouryearcollegeand the name is changed to Fayetteville State TeachersCollege. Eightmoremodembuild- ings are erected: enrollment increases; the collegeacquiresmembershipintheAmerican Association ofColleges forTeacherEduca- tionandreceivesbothstateandregionalac- creditation. 1956 Dr.RudolphJones,iselectedpresidentofthecollege. Duringhisadministra- tion, thecurriculumisexpandedtoincludemajorsotherthanelementaryeduca- tionandtwo-yearcoursesareadded. Hesecuresappropriationsforrenovating thegymnasiumandmakinge.xtensiveimprovementonthegroundstoinclude pavedroads,parkingareas,andnewcampuslighting. 1960 inDecember. 1960.thecollegebecomesamemberoftheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSecond- arySchools. Enrollmentreaches1.000students,thehighestinthehistoryoftheinstitution.
