Holding back tears, Kat emerged from the stables, breath ragged in her throat. She scanned the battlements and courtyard, searching for a guard, for anyone who might have seen something, anything that might help find Siegfried's killer.
Her tutors had told about the days long past where priests killed witches and warlocks by driving wooden stake into their heads, stuffing their mouths with garlic, and marking their flesh with the sign of the five-pointed-star. The message could not be clearer. Whoever this was believed Kat to be a witch.
As her heart thundered in her chest, she drew in a long breath. Siegfried had done nothing wrong. How could someone kill and innocent creature? She narrowed her eyes, jaw tensing as she fixed her gaze on the kennels.
She bounded towards the kennels and banged at the door. "Karl?" She shook the handle to find the door locked. "Are you in there?"
