The the- matic issues of this period include not only debates about the ‘specialness’ oftherelationshipinthepost-warcontext,butalsotheimpactofthedevel- opmentanddemiseofthe‘ColdWar’;theongoingimpactoftheEuropean Project and EU integration, the influence of nuclear weapons and NATO, aswellaswidereconomic, cultural, demographicandenvironmentalforces that have shaped the transatlantic relationship. Within this broad context, theworkseekstoaddressthreeoverachingandinterrelatedquestions:first, to assess the role the Embassy has played at crucial junctures in Anglo- American relations; secondly, to consider the opportunities that arise for a US Ambassador to influence events within the transatlantic relationship; and, thirdly, toestablishwhetheranyrecurringfeaturesorprinciplescanbe identifiedwhichcontributetoanenhancedunderstandingoflong-standing debatesoverAnglo-Americanrelations,USForeignPolicyandInternational Relations. In analysing each Ambassador since 1938 and the Embassy they headed, the work posits Transatlantic Diplomacy as a concept that extends beyondAnglo-Americanrelationsinexplainingtheevolutiondiplomacyin internationalrelationsintothetwenty-firstcentury. ix
