In the lull of midday, you can hear the noon whistle blow in town, five miles up the road. Take your time and stay awhile—you may catch a glimpse of the elves. Here among the vines, Penny Kelly, the owner of Lily Hill Farm, meets a small group of elves who invite her to “find the nature of balance, rather than the balance in nature.” Until now, Penny has never believed that elves, fairies, or any wee folk existed. She doubts her eyes and ears until, in a pivotal moment of blind trust, she makes a deal with them. Over the next several years, as she struggles to hold up her end of the deal, the elves, the earth, and the elements teach her a series of powerful and challenging lessons that profoundly change her life—and will undeniably change yours, too. About the Author In early 1987, Penny Kelly and her husband, Jim, purchased fifty-seven acres of land, complete with a ioo-year-old house, a dilapidated barn, and two small vineyards. At the time, they knew nothing about raising grapes. Since then, they have remodeled the house into a rental property, and turned the barn into their home, office, and small learning center. They are in the process of restoring the soil, vineyards, and some of the natural habitat that had been lost. Since the encounters with the elves, they have decided to grow their own fruits, vegetables, herbs, and grains, and raise chickens and goats. In addition to her B.A., Penny has earned a degree in naturopathic medicine, and is working toward a Ph.D. in nutrition. After a spontaneous “awakening of kundalini” in 1979, Penny found hen self struggling with massive psychic abilities and overwhelming changes in pen ception and consciousness. Afraid she was losing her mind, she left her job as a tool and process engineer for the Chrysler Corporation, and returned to college to study the brain, consciousness, perception, intelligence, and related subjects. This led to her work as an educational consultant specializing in brain-compat- ible and accelerative teaching and learning techniques. Acknowledgments I would like to thank everyone who helped what at first seemed like an improH able idea to become a reality. I am eternally grateful to Nan Skovran at Llewellyn who first saw merit in the disconnected journal pages she received; to Jessica Thoreson and Amy Rost for shepherding the project through many editing tasks; and to Carl Llewellyn Weschke for his graciousness and the great common sense he brings to Llewellyn Publishing. Thanks are also due to my parents, Hugh and Shirley Kelly; my daugH ters Kelly Anne and Penelope Wood; Chuck Reinert; Lad and Jana Hanka; and Rosana Rodriques. Each of them read and commented on the manuscript at various and difficult stages. But special thanks go to my husband, Jim Jenzen, not only for his unhesitating acceptance of the elves and the difficult things they asked us to do, things that went against all conventional grape^growing wisdom, but also for his encouragement to write and rewrite.. .which meant he had the kitchen all to himself!
