$19.95 The Eisenhower Diaries Edited ind introduced by Robert H. Ferrell Since his final presidential speech in 1961 that warned against the conjunc- tion of the military establishment and the arms industry, Eisenhowers image has changed from that of a strictly mil- itary man to one of a man who under- — stood both war and politics who recognized and worked against the dangers of misplaced power. Nowhere is the transformation of Eisenhower from soldier to politician clearer than in his personal diaries which he began in 1935. Hundreds of entries, many of them extremely frank, provide constant commentaries on the general-president as he moves through World War II and on to Washington. The diaries show him to be an inten- sely moral man, not the hypocrite his enemies made him out to be, and they elucidate his procedures with people. His drive to the top — was ingrained in his personality but his actions were always in keeping with his midwestern upbringing and his years at West Point. From his di- aries, Eisenhower emerges a compli- — cated man one who foresaw many of the political and military problems that trouble the United States today.
