Professor Williams has spent most of his adult life studying and teaching Indian and Pakistan history, and has lived in those two countries for long periods of time. While Professor of Modern Indian History at Allahabad University, he built up a school of Mughal studies among young, Indian scholars. He was invited by the Indian government to help prepare Indian constitutional re¬ forms. During his years in India, he formed close friendships with such leaders of the Indian nationalist movement as Jawaharlal Nohru and his father MotiIar, Tej Bahadur Sapru, Madan Mohan Malviyd, Mohamed AM Jinnah, and many other important figures, in Indian political life. Subsequently, he became director of the government of India Department of Public Relations. Professor WiHiams has distinguished himself as a journalist as well as an historian and diplomat, and is the Asian specialist on the editorial staff of the Times.
