We hope that we have done some justice to the depth of expertise, and pride in excellence of work demonstrated daily by contractors, organisations, and individuals in the drilling industry. Where the information comes from Much of the information in this new manual was earlier published as Drilling, the Manual of Methods, Applications and Management, and has been included here after it has been extensively revised. This publication also draws on the Australian Drilling Manual, and the Australian Driller’s Guide. We acknowledge the contribution of the past ADITC publications that have provided a continuous resource to the industry since 1981. The Drilling Manual draws on current good industry practice and on current and forward technology, with direct input from industry personnel. To achieve this, we have consulted industry members whose knowledge is recognised in the industry, rather than relying exclusively on academic references. Both these sources have value and, as in any industry, both make a signiicant contribution to good industry practice. It is also the reason that the style of writing varies across the Drilling Manual. We have made thorough and best eforts to be accurate and fair, and to acknowledge all sources of information. Who the Drilling Manual is intended for This manual will be useful to members of the drilling industry, from owner–operators to large contractors, and also to people who simply want to know about the industry. We aim to provide reference information about ‘what’, ‘how’, and also ‘why’. (This publication does not deal with ofshore oil and gas drilling.) Our aim is to provide a reference work for the drilling industry in Australia and throughout the world, with a reasonably deep level of information. The drilling industry covers a wide range of sectors and applications. Drilling occurs in all nations around the world, and in the seas surrounding those nations. Throughout the world there is a vast range of industry practice. For these reasons some historical information has been retained, even though current industry practice in Australia has now changed. We thank … ADITC most sincerely thanks the many industry contributors – companies and individuals – who have provided review, information, photos, updated practice, and new technological information. We also thank the companies and individuals who have provided sponsorship. We thank the Commitee members without whose expertise, insight, and overview this complex review and inal publication could not have been achieved. We particularly thank ADITC’s drilling technical editor, Mr Max King, for his knowledge, writing, and research.
