C hhibber; distinguished scholars from India and abroad; ladies and gentlemen, I feel it my proud privilege to extend w arm welcome to respected Dr. K.R. Narayanan Ji, Vice-President of India, on behalf of people of this region and as a trustee of the G uru G obind Singh Foundation here this evening. We are, indeed, indebted to him for sparing his valuable time from his pressing schedule to inaugurate this ‘International Inter- Faith Conclave’ to m ark the celebration, in 1999, of the 300th Anniversary of the creation of ‘K halsa Panth’ founded in 1699 by the Tenth M aster of Sikhism , Sri G uru Gobind Singh Ji. Friends, this is, indeed, a unique forum of well w ishers of m ankind, who have come all the way from different parts of the globe to bless us with their . Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji eLibrary [email protected] . valuable thoughts and experiences and to deliberate upon the theme of great significance not for India but for the whole w orld in this environm ent of despair and distrust. As you know, there is a great challenge before us to see that the m ost natural and basic aspirations of whole m ankind are preserved and encouraged so that our centuries-old civilization and rich heritage is not destroyed and disturbed in any way Throughout our ancient history, and particularly in d ark est periods, we got both inspiration and instruction from our great G urus, Sufis and Saints, - Sri G uru Nanak Dev Ji, Sri G uru Gobind Singh, Gautam Buddha, Mahavir, Adi S hankaracharya, Baba Ear id, G uru Ravidas Ji and m any other spiritual am bassadors - representing different faiths and currents of Indian thought, all attuned to the heritage which helped our civilization to survive through its great challenges and gave hope to the poor and the oppressed. Sri G uru Nanak . Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji eLibrary [email protected] . Dev Ji had sought to cure the hostility of faiths and the tyranny of caste and superstition. Similarly, Sri G uru Gobind Singh Ji, the Tenth M aster of Sikhism , in whose m em ory this foundation was set up, founded Khalsa Panth for preserving hum an and secular values and highest ideals of justice. The first five persons who were adm inistered Holy Amrit by Great Guru, while creating the Khalsa, were from different regions of India. He was preaching the ‘oneness of all hum anity’, the sam e message that G uru Nanak delivered to m ankind when he arose out of the Bein river after his interface with the Divine. According to the ‘Janam Sakhi’ legends, his message was : ‘No Hindu, No M uslman’. Here he was stressing that m an is Man first : his prim ary essence lies in his intrinsic hum anity and his denom inational description is of ju st secondary im portance. On the sam e lines, other saints propagated the sam e spiritual message. If we go deeply through their 5 . Holy Scripture, Sri G uru G ranth Sahib, is a unique sym bol of secularism and universal brotherhood which consists of ‘divine w ords of spiritual enlightenm ent and wisdom’ of 36 divinely spirited souls of whom the Sikh G urus are ju st seven while others are Hindus Saints, M uslims Sufis, etc. It is worth recalling here that the unity of religions, not only at conceptual level, but also in practice, has always been one of m ain driving forces in Indian history. It is unfortunate part of our system that religion which is solely for spiritual contentm ent and for seeking welfare of all, has been exploited by certain vested interests for their narrow goals. History reveals that the misconceived plans were m ade in different tim es through religious fanatacism to create walls of hatred among people of different comm unities, clouding the judgem ent of people and . Let us rem em ber that a true religion is like a prism which radiates out the Divine Ray into a variety of colours with an ‘inner unity’. Unfortunately, when religion becomes a dogma, it tends to contain, to im prison, the Divine Ray w ithin its narrow bounds. This forum, I wish m ust think to discover the real causes of fundam entalism and suggest solutions to remove them. Our peerless heritage, w hich we inherited from our founding fathers, can becom e an inspiration for m ankind, struggling with relentless dem ands of a technological Society. But this is possible only when we ourselves are aware of the true values of our legacy. The challenge facing us today calls upon the people to be worthy of our heritage. It is for the people of India, viz., Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and C hristians and all others, to ensure that we keep alive our long cherished tradition of love and brotherhood, and indeed, build upon it a 7 . With these words, I once again express my gratitude for associating me with this gracious occasion and wish the conclave’ a great success. JAI HIND 8 .
