Hinton o l n w o D Index 327 VI Foreword 7 1 0 2 y r a u r b e F 0 2 6 2 This volume is intended as an expression of affection and : 4 1 appreciation for Sir Herbert Butterfield on the occasion of his t ] a seventieth birthday. Professor Butterfield's range of interests has o g been so wide, and the company of his friends and admirers so e Di great, that the editors found themselves in some difficulty as to the n best means of commemorating the event. They finally decided in a S favour of a volume containing a relatively small number of a, i essays, each of which would touch upon some kind of history or n r o historical theme which Professor Butterfield has illuminated, and f i al which has been dear to his heart. This decision necessarily meant C f that many of Sir Herbert's friends and former students could not o y be represented in the volume, although they would certainly wish t i to be associated with the intention behind it. They and others s r e will recognize in the diversity of the contributions here printed v i n a reflection of the remarkable diversity of interests of Sir Herbert U [ himsel£ This diversity precludes any unity of theme, other than y b that which derives from the desire to do honour to the recipient- d e to express admiration for the historian, and affection for the man. d oa The editors wish to thank the contributors for their under.~ l n standing co.~operation, which has notably lightened their task. w o It is a matter of special regret to them that Professor Horn should D not have lived to see his essay in print. They also wish to express their thanks to Mr J. R. Harrison of the Cambridge University Library for his assistance to Dr Hinton in the preparation of the bibliography. Vll
