ThereseemedtobesomethingmagicaboutPaul.Hehadaspecialpowerwhichallowedhimtobeclosetopeople.That specialpoweriscalled love. The lovehe sharedwithhis familyandfriendscouldbe seeninthewayhelived. Hewas always willingtohelp. Ifyouneeded a smilehewouldstartinwithhis "RowdyRoddy"imitations. Ifyouneededtobeserious,Paul was allears. AtPaul'smemorial,"TheGreatestLoveofAll"wassungbyallpresent.SomeofthelyricsinthatsongrepresentPaul's life: "I decidedlongagonevertowalkinanyone'sshadow;ifIfail,ifIsucceed, atleastIlivedasIbelieve,nomatterwhat they take fromme, theycan'ttake awaymydignity..." Pauldidliveashebelievdandhesucceeded.Althoughhislifewascutshort,Paullivedalifefullofloveandenthusiasm. Hehad a right to be proud and we are proud also. Thewords ofJohnF. ChristaCorriganMcAuliffegrewupinFraminghamandreceivedherBachelor'sDegreefromFraminghamStateCollege in 1970. ShelivedinConcord,N.H. whereshetaughthistory. Itwasherinterestinstudentsthatledher toapply fortheposition offirst teacherinspace. Inthefinalcompetition,Christa explainedherhopesfortheprogram. "Iwant tode-mystify NASAand spaceflight,"shesaid. "Theastronautsarenotreallyconnectingwiththeaveragestudentintheclassroom. Iwantstudentstosee and understand the special perspective ofspace and relate it to them." Christa quickly earned the love ofthe nation withher enthusiasm and zest for life. She was a pioneer in every sense of theword. PeoplewaitedanxiouslyforChrista toteachfromspace;shewasgoingtogetherchanceto "humanizethetechnology of the space age." Everyone's hopes were shattered in the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. Christa and the six other astronauts on board were killed 75 seconds into their flight. A helpless nation watched in fear, anger, and disbelief. FraminghamStateCollegesuffered withtheworld. Christa had planned tospeakat thegraduationceremoniesin May. Greatplans hadbeen made fora welcomebackceremony. Inone devestating moment, everythingwaschanged; FSC had losta hero. ChristaMcAullifewasa truehero.Shewasrespectedandadmiredbyeveryone. ForFraminghamStateCollegestudents she was a promise offuture accomplishments. She proved to all that "the sky is no longer the limit." Christa's ideas and spiritwill always live on at Framingham State College. Aswearea partofherpast, she will always beapartofourfuture. Shehasshownushow to "reachforthestars."Christa willalwayshold a specialplacein theheartsofthe classof1986.
