Previously, we have discussed the $1 and $2 Silver Certificates and presented graphs of their Bidding history since 1991. The $5 Silver Certificate is the nrost expensive of the three notes. It Bids at $275 in VG and climbs to $6,000 in Gem CU. From the lowest grade to the highest, it is approximately double in value to the $2 Silver Certificate (the $2 Silver Certificate is about twice the value of the $1 Silver Certificate). This is the note that most collectors purchase after they have obtained the first two. Many dealers and collectors feel that this is the note that should be purchased first because the less expensive notes then seem more reasonable. In some cases, collectors will tend to purchase higher grades of the $1 and $2 because they are more economical. $3,600 $3,400 - $3,200 - $3,000 - $2,800 - $2,600 - $2,400 - $2,200 - f I I I I I I ' I I I-r— 1 I I I .1 The 1896 $5 Silver Certificate, FR 268-270, seems to contain a June-91 June-92 June-93 June-94 June-95 June'96 more definitive allegorical message than the previous two notes. The obverse shows Electricity as the primary force in the world. At the time, this may have been true; but while it is still a dominating force in the world, it does seem less superior than at the turn of the previous century. The reverse pictures Ulysses S. Grant and Philip Sheridan (Union Army Generals). As you can see from the charts at the right, the $5 Silver Certifi¬ cate has now reached its all-time highs in the three grades repre¬ sented. In 1991, the Gem CU was priced right around the $4,500 mark. This shows a tidy profit of nearly 35%. The Choice CU was as high as $3,300 in 1991 and again in mid-1995. However, at one point in June of 1992, it fell to the $2,400 level. Rising from then to today's Bid indicates a cool 50% profit; that is, of course, if you had the crystal ball working and purchased specimens at this low level. In the last six years, the AU grade has steadily risen to its current high of $2,350. GRADING (,rrn( tisp UrKirruIjifH An almosl perfect note. Better than average margins. No aging or fading.
