NAT. HIST. BULL. SIAM Soc. 50(1): 111-114,2 002 The Correct Interpretation of Euonymus auriculatus Craib (Celastraceae) and Myladenia serrata Airy Shaw (Euphorbiaceae) ABSTRACT Euonymus auriculatus Craib (Celas甘aceae)is as ynonym of Lasiococca comberi Haines (Euphorbiaceae). The genus Lasiococca is an ew record for Thai1and. Myladenia serrata Airy Shaw (Euphorbiaceae) is as ynonym of Xylosma longifolium Clos (Flacourtiac巴ae) Key words: Euonymus,L asiococca,M yladenia,X ylosma,T ha1iand,s ynonymy Euphorbiaceae are notoriously difficult to identify. In ar ecent pile of unidentified Malesian Euphorbiaceae,se nt to Leiden (The Netherlands) for identification,9 0 percent of the specimens appeared to belong to other families. Even experienced taxonomists s.till make errors of judgement,es pecially when they have to interpret-to them-new forms. This note deals with two species,o ne described in the Celastraceae,t he other in the Euphorbiaceae. Euonymus auriculatus Craib CRAIB (1922) interpreted as pecimen collected by A. F. G. Kerr (Kerr 3620) in the province of Chiang Mai (called Payap on the label),T hailand. He considered it to be a species of Euonymus (Celastraceae) and because ofthe densely echinate fruit,sh ort petioles and cordate leaf base,it had to be an ew species. He subsequently described it as E. auriculatus CRAIB (1922). Recently,t he two type sheets of E. auriculatus from Aberdeen were sent for identification to Hou in Leiden. Hou first thought that the species was described on the basis of galled fruits,b ecause densely echinate fruits are absent in Euonymus. After consultation with Van Balgooy the material landed on myd esk,be cause出eywere clearly Euphorbiaceae. Rather atypical for Euphorbiaceae were the subopposite or whorled leaves. Identification of the two specimens was ab it troublesome,b ecause the plants looked like Erismanthus (opposite leaves) or Epiprinus siletianus (Baill.) Croizat (whorled leaves),bo th with cordate leaf bases. Unfortunately,t hese taxa have smooth fruits. Recently,1 r evised the genus Lasiococca for the Malay Archipelago (WELZEN,1 998). The species in血isgenus have whorled,c ordate leaves and echinate fruits. The two duplicates def泊itelybelong to Lasiococca. Lasiococca is ag enus still unknown for Thailand,w hich is quite curious because the revision of the family is almost finished for the Flora of 官lailandproject. Two years before Craib,in the same joumal,H AI悶 S(1920) described an ew species of Lasiococca,L. comberi Haines. Euonymus auriculatus is synonymous with this species because of the subbasal,s ubmarginal glands on the adaxial leaf surface,t he absence of hair-側負 domatia, the pubescent inflorescences,a nd the broad tubercles on the仕uits.A Received 29 November 2001; accepted 19 February 2002. 111 112 NOTES 凶ceplate can be found in K町(1982).Consequently E. auriculatus is placed into the S戸lonymyof L. comberi: Lasiococca comberi Haines (Euphorbiaceae),B 凶1.Misc.
