I have been unable to bring myself to change Voegelin’s predilectionfor“onprinciple”tothestandardusageof“inprinciple,” however, because this peculiarity and other idiosyncracies that do notstandinthewayofclarityformpartofthebook’scharm. Thus, every effort has been made to leave the text as Voegelin himselfleftit.Forexample,Ihaverefrainedfromaddingmorerecent publications about Plato and Aristotle on the grounds that it is impossible to know which of the many secondary works published since then Voegelin himself would have chosen to include in his noteshadhelivedtorevisetheeditionhimself. Theprincipalchangeistheadditionofanintroductionbymyself, which is the result of my own interaction with the work, for forty yearsmymostesteemedcompanioninteachingandthinkingabout theco-foundersofpoliticaltheory.
