Dear Class of 201 3, You probably will not read this letter until months after you graduate. After you leaf through your yearbook you will put this copy ofCiarla on a shelf, or in a box and schlep it with you while you move from one home to the next. Or maybe you’ll leave it at your Helm parents’ house until they bug you to get your stuffpacked up. In any event, it’s unlikely that you will read this letter very often and that years will intervene between each time you pick up this volume. Writing a letter to be read under such conditions is a challenge! The yearbook you are holding will not change over the years - but you will. Eventually you will look at your own picture and the pictures ofyour friends and be amazed at your Randy hairstyle, clothing choices, and unbelievable youthfulness. Flipping through these pages you may experience pleasant memories, or feelings ofangst, or even regret depending on your unique Muhlenberg experience. You will almost certainly have a different perspective on that experience each time you pick up this Ciarla. Here’s what I hope will not change. I hope you will continue to cherish the friendships you made here. I hope you will continue to exercise the love oflearning you developed President here. I hope you will continue to appreciate the sacrifices ofyour parents, the patience and dedication ofyour professors, and the hard work ofothers who worked together to give you the best education we could. It is human nature to give ourselves credit for our accomplishments, I suppose. All too often, that means we underestimate the investment others have made in our success. From You have worked hard at Muhlenberg. You have every right to be proud. But as you look back on what I hope will be a life well spent, I hope you will understand that you stood on the shoulders ofgiants - and that your shoulders are needed ifthe next generation is to reach for the stars. Message wish you well in the coming years. Keep your Muhlenberg friends close. Come back to I campus often. See your professors. Get to meet the new students. Remain an active part ofthe Muhlenberg family. A Cordially, Randy Helm 6
