Dr. Karagulla was primarily interested in research con cerning the disease process in relation to the chakras, and therefore most of our cases had this orientation. During the more than twenty years which have passed since we did this work together, the main focus of my own interest has been therapeutic, and my efforts have been to help people with severe illnesses who are suffering pain. This change in emphasis in my work has been gradual, although it received a greater impetus from the develop ment of a method of healing called "Therapeutic Touch," which Dolores Krieger and I initiated, and which has been taught to thousands of nurses. During the subsequent years, I have seen hundreds of patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses. There fore I have learned a great deal more about the disease process than I knew at the time the investigations with Dr. Karagulla took place. In fact, we never really worked together on the therapeutic aspects of our research. I met Dr. Viola Petitt Neal, who was Shafica Karagulla's teacher and closest friend, but she did not participate in the actual work that we did in New York City. Later, when they were living together in California, I came to know her much better, and to appreciate her deep vii viii FOREWORD devotion to spiritual principles. She was very much in terested in the book project, and contributed the outline of the basic ideas in the first three chapters. During my visits to California, Dr. Karagulla talked to me about the possibility of organizing our research material and writing it up for publication in book form. Prior to her death, Dr. Neal participated in many of these con versations. It was always agreed among the three of us that I would have the opportunity to review the manuscript and make whatever changes I thought were required. Dr. Karagulla kept me informed of her progress, and tele phoned me about it only a week before her sudden and unexpected death, which was a great shock to all of us. A few weeks after her fatal accident, the materials upon which the book was to be based came into my hands, as her family agreed that they should be given to me with full rights to oversee publication. I had thought the manu script at or near completion but was surprised to find that many of the chapters were mere notes. I decided that much more work would need to be done before it was ready for publication, and I therefore asked my friend Emily Sellon, a professional editor, to undertake the task. As a result, the original manuscript as designed by Dr. Karagulla and Dr. Neal has had to be extensively revised, for which I take responsibility. Even the title has been altered, although this was agreed upon before Dr. Karagulla's death. Under these difficult circumstances, it will be under stood that this book contains a mixture of views and contributions. In order to gain coherence, these have been blended together and shaped into final form by Mrs. Sellon. Shafica Karagulla was a dear friend and a rare individual who combined medical and scientific professionalism with a completely open mind and an eager interest in unexplored fields. During our long friendship her en thusiasm for the possibilities opened up by our .investiga tions never flagged. This book could not have been FOREWORD ix accomplished without her sustained and thoughtful interest, and our efforts to make it readable and under standable are offered as a tribute to her.
