SHIPLEY CENTER NEWSLETTER Page 4 DECEMBER 2017 A Day in Athens, Greece By Margaret Cox As many of you know, I was recently on a two-month European holiday. Last month, we visited the small Greek island of Mykonos. This month, we are on mainland Greece docked at the port of Piraeus (Peer’-ee-us). Yes, the “proper” Greek pronunciations are quite different than what we have learned in English! A bus ride took us to the capital of Greece, Athens, one of the world’s oldest cities. Its recorded history spans over 3,400 years, the earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC. From the 5th Century BC, it was considered “the motherland of Western civilization.” What an exhilarating, exhausting day this was! We took the Deluxe Archeological Athens tour which was to be 8 hours . . . but turned out to be 9 . . . with a lot of that time spent walking uphill and down, many steep steps, broken tiles at odd angles, cobblestones, and sand! We climbed to the top of the Acropolis (acro=height; opolis=city), which dominates Athens, 230 feet above the city, and walked around the Parthenon (5th century BC), considered “the most perfect example of classical architecture in the world.” Also here is the Erechtheion, the temple of Athena, a tribute to her Work being done on the Parthenon “winning” over Poseidon for naming rights for the city! (In Greece, it is difficult to separate mythology from fact!) It had 6 maiden statues holding up the roof, but only 5 remain, one being in the British Museum (The Greeks want her back!), “courtesy” of Lord Elgin who indiscriminately plundered Greek archaeological sites to send shiploads of artifacts back to Britain at the beginning of the 19th century. The figures here are reproductions, the four originals being in the New Acropolis Museum. Then to the National Archaeological Museum which Erechtheion, Temple of Athena houses “the world’s finest collection of Greek antiquities, highlights being the golden mask of Agamemnon, Minoan frescoes, and a bronze Poseidon.” On a brief city tour, we saw the Temple of Zeus (once over 100 pillars, but Golden Mask of Agamemnon only 19 remaining), completed by Hadrian; and Hadrian’s Gate, a tribute to Hadrian for all he had spent in rebuilding Athens. (Yes, that same Roman Emperor, Hadrian, who built the famous wall in Northumberland, British Isles . . . he really got around!) After lunch, we visited the New Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009, which features the surviving treasures from that site. As they were excavating for this museum, more ruins were found! This was a large Bronze Statue of Zeus urban settlement dating from Archaic to early or Poseidon Christian Athens. Rather than excavating further, there is a see-through plaza above, and glass floors throughout the museum so visitors can view this 3000-year-old wonder. Of particular interest was the Glass Gallery, with a panoramic view Entrance to the New Acropolis Museum of the Acropolis, which has the exact dimensions of the Parthenon. Here, the showing the earlier ruins, and glass floors. sculptures of the friezes—and parts of them—are situated exactly where they would have been in the original structure. These are a combination of actual pieces, plaster casts of pieces that reside in other museums around the world, and blank spaces. Next month, I will take you on a journey to Olympus, the site of the Ancient Olympic Games! SHIPLEY CENTER NEWSLETTER Pag e 5 DECEMBER 2017 Michael’s Message BY MICHAEL SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR > FOR-Impact NON-Profit! Who remembers the 1990’s comedy show, Dinosaurs, on TV? It was about a working class family, the Sinclair’s, set in 60,000,000 B.C. The dinosaurs were large puppets, inspired by Muppets creator, Jim Henson. The father, Earl Sinclair, pushed down trees for a living for the Wesayso Corporation. (There were many references to the oil industry in the series, using names like Sinclair for the family, Ethyl the mother- in-law, and Earl’s boss being named Bradley P. “BP” Richfield.) When Earl came home from a hard day of work, he wanted to be welcomed and respected. But the way Baby Dinosaur greeted him grated on Earl’s nerves. Being at home all day with Momma, Baby, upon seeing Earl from his highchair, would loudly blurt out “NOT the Momma!” Baby would not say “Daddy” and the recurring joke from 1991 to 1994 was Earl trying to get his son to call him “Daddy”! He was tormented by his son’s, “NOT the Momma! NOT the Momma!” identifying him constantly by what he was not. Photo Credit: ABC/Dinosaurs Nonprofit organizations can fall into the same predicament as Earl. By stressing the NOT in not-for-profit, the mission, or IMPACT of what we do can be lost. So I’d like us to refer to ourselves here at Shipley Center as a FOR-Impact organization, instead of a “non” or “not” organization. Shipley Center is FOR you, the man, woman or couple that wants a fun place to do things. We are FOR friendship, recreation, and education. We are FOR healthier bodies, for active minds, for engaging volunteer opportunities. We are FOR providing a place to get help with your taxes, your computer, your health insurance, your feet, your stress, your diabetes. Shipley Center is FOR affordable meals and socializing in our Café. We are FOR providing great customer service at our front desk. We are FOR excellence in our newsletter, our website, and in all of our communications. We are FOR great trips on the bus, fun games, and good food. Shipley Center is FOR thinking ahead and planning FOR the future. That’s why we are moving ahead with plans to build a new Health & Wellness Annex across the street. As you plan your end-of-year giving, please be FOR what we are trying to accomplish, so we can do MORE of what we are FOR! During this holiday season, I wish . . . FOR you and your extended family to be healthy and happy. FOR there to be a bit more “holy” in the holidays this year. FOR our troops to be protected and appreciated now and when they come home. FOR wisdom and guidance for those who make and enforce our laws. FOR peace on earth, peace in our hearts . . . and a piece of my wife’s pecan pie! I wish FOR YOU to have a memorable, warm, and Merry Christmas . . . Happy Hanukkah . . . Happy Holidays . . . and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
