In writing it I had to assume the, for me, unusual réle of a research student in history. I could not have acquired all the information I needed without help from others. I am chiefly indebted to Professor René Nelli, formerly professor of mediaeval studies at the University of Toulouse, and to Mon- sieur Jean Duvernoy. In letters and encounters over five years Professor Nelli has rendered me inestimable service in verifying the statements made by Mrs. Smith in her dreams and revelations. Contact with him also stimulated me to increase my knowledge of, and insight into, the aims and philosophy of Catharism. I owe a tremendous debt to Monsieur Jean Duvernoy whose works, along with those of Professor Nelli, are enumerated in the bibliography. Monsieur Duvernoy has never failed to supply me with valuable information, particularly with regard to the close- knit relationship between the families involved in my story. In the late Summer of 1969 when I visited the Languedoc, Monsieur Duvernoy not only read this book to exclude the possibility of historical errors but also gave up the best part of three days to increasing my education. Mademoiselle Josette Lamé and Ash Hanson were immensely and productively helpful in commenting on the mediaeval songs recorded by Mrs. Smith. I am also grateful to Miss Madge Lovell, who typed this book, for her repeat performance of the perpetual miracle of reading my handwriting, to my wife for typing intricate insertions and footnotes, to Brenda Smith and Quentin Guirdham for their scrutiny of the finished product, to Mr. Ian Macdonald and the Reverend K. B. Flenley for translating the depositions in Latin, and to Peter Pagan and the staff of the Bath Libraries for their amazing persistence and conscientiousness in obtaining, from all manner of sources, the books I required for my researches. I do not need to say that I am indebted to Mrs. Smith for the remarkable and copious raw material with which she supplied me. 7 S 3 y a ! Z S 3 N 0 N O w B o Y LN NN NVN .
