Beneath the surface, profound political, social, economic and cultural changes were occurring in the socialist and former socialist countries, resulting in the collapse and transformations of the existing socialist order and thechangingparametersofworldMarxism.Thisvolumedraws oninnovativeresearchtobringtogetherhistoryfromaboveand below,includingsocial,cultural,genderandtransnationalhistory totranscendtheoldseparationbetweencommuniststudiesand thebroaderfieldofcontemporaryhistory.
