THE PARK SCHOOL OF BALTIMORE BROWNIE Dear Reader, Obviously, this isn’t how we wanted you to receive your yearbook. But in light of a few months of turmoil and inconsistency, we have still managed to produce our yearbook. Hopefully, this year’s edition of the Brownie will remind us what school will be like when we are all together again. This book is a collection of the time that we’ve spent together (and apart) in the past school year. We hope that while flipping through the pages you’ll look back at the events of our year with fondness. It pains us that our year has been altered in such a way and that such drastic changes had to be made to our academic calendar and our yearbook, but as a result of this, the book that you’re holding in your hands is more than just any old yearbook: it’s a historical document. Someday, you’ll be able to look through the following pages and show them to others as a snapshot of what our lives at Park and the world were like at this time—both before and during the spring of this year. We commend all of your abilities to stick with it and continue learning through distance learning while our school has been shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic and we are regulated to stay at home. And thank you to our teachers and administrators who have worked tirelessly to bring a sense of semblance to this year’s spring semester. Please veiw the following pages for insight into how our lives have changed globaly and as a community as this pandemic has spread. We want this book to be a small light of normality during a time where everything feels crazy, so please, read this book and remember the parts of our year that we spent together. And of course, don’t forget to look forward to seeing each other again in the Fall. What followed was silence. It was not an awkward silence. Rather, it was a mutual understanding that the modern language department, and Park School as a whole, would be suffering a great loss. Whether you know Ileana from sitting in her classes, witnessing her impressive assemblies, or simply seeing her smile as she walks down the hall, she always brings her positive attitude and admirable work ethic to everything she does. Students will tell you what a phenomenal teacher I am fortunate enough to have had Ileana as a Spanish teacher lleana is. Her colleagues will attest to the fact that for two years. In those two years, she consistently challenged she’s an experienced pro. Ileana always jokes with our class that having her as our teacher for three years of high school is far too many. Our class disagrees. She made each and every class interesting, When I think about Ileana, the first word that comes and pushed us to learn. Ileana has helped us love the to mind is “generosity.” Ileana has been so generous process of learning a language, and three years doesn’t feel with her students and her colleagues. Generous with like enough time together. her time, with her ideas, with her feedback, and with her actions. Her generosity goes beyond the walls of When our Jeopardy games (a class favorite) became Park. Not only is she the most generous mother, wife competitive, she told us that t odos ganamos — we all win— and friend, but she has also given so much to the larger when we are learning Spanish. When we had to practice AP Baltimore community, often in the shadows and always essays (not a class favorite), she thoroughly prepared us with humility. Everything she does, she does with love, and reminded us not to forget the grammar we’d spent so passion and authenticity. I will miss having her as a long learning. And for every lesson we covered in class, her fellow immigrant but also as a mentor and my best love of teaching and of our class was evident. She wanted friend in the Upper School. Ileana is also one of the our projects, sports games, and performances that we had most thoughtful people I know, always thinking about mentioned in past weeks. She offered us a listening ear, ways to support anyone who is struggling or suffering, thoughtful advice, homemade treats, and was always ready be it students, colleagues or friends in her immediate to defend us.
