This Springer imprint is published by the registered company Springer Nature Switzerland AG The registered company address is: Gewerbestrasse 11, 6330 Cham, Switzerland Preface This book presents 90 biographical portraits, appearing together in a single volume for the first time, of pioneers in brain research, associated one way or another with the prewar Vienna school of neuropsychiatry that was brought into being mainly through the teachings of Meynert, Obersteiner, Wagner-Jauregg, and Marburg. It is the product of two decades of labor and archival research into sources that are not readily available in standard digital databases. Science largely stands on the shoulders of those who preceded us. Their contri- butions often remain unheeded in dusty library shelves. This book is intended to be a memorial tribute to investigators who effected progress in neuroscience, and a stepping-stone for scholars who wish to delve further into the concepts and themes discussed. The title of the book, The Brain Masters of Vienna, is of course a paraphrase from Wagner’s music drama, The Master Singers of Nürnberg, composed in 1845–1867. The subtitle specifies the approximate timeframe with two historical landmarks: the Vienna Secession (die Wiener Secession), a movement formed in 1897 by Klimt, Moser, Hoffmann, and other artists as a confrontation with tradi- tional style, and the annexation of Austria (der Anschluss Österreichs) into the German Reich in 1938. In the early 1900s, Vienna was the unrivaled center of central European culture, home to music, art, and a leading university which celebrated its quincentennial in 1865 and attracted students and researchers from around the world. After the First World War, it changed from a happy and prosperous city to one of poverty and fam- ine, a host to thousands of war disabled amid two pandemics, influenza and enceph- alitis lethargica. Hyperinflation wrecked the economic efforts of the new Republic, and fortunes disappeared. Political instability deteriorated in the 1930s. The Second World War halted progress and led European academic centers to disaster. In March 1938, the Anschluss of Austria into the Third Reich took a heavy toll on the medical faculty at the University of Vienna. About one-half of Viennese physicians were of Jewish descent. Some professors ended their own lives while others were forced to relinquish their posts, spend time in custody, were dismissed on account of racial grounds, dismantled of their belongings, and deported to concentration camps. The v vi Preface unanswered question will remain: beyond the killings of innocent millions, where might humanity be today had it not been deprived of the cerebral, cultural, and sci- entific potential of war victims and their intellectual progeny. Despite the tragic circumstances of two world wars, many overcame the con- straints of National Socialism and settled overseas to nurture their ambitions and pursue their spiritual goals as doctors, researchers, and teachers. Having distin- guished themselves in their motherland, they emigrated and spread their knowledge to the New World. These pioneers remained resilient against adversity, with an admirable dignity that leaves an indelible lesson for later generations. Travels in search of literature have taken me to the Edward G. Miner Library at the University of Rochester, New York; the Ruth Lilly Medical Library at Indiana University in Indianapolis; the Library of Congress in Washington, DC; the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland; the Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; the National Library of Greece and the Department of Neurology at Aiginiteion Hospital in Athens; the Department of Medical History–Josephinum at the Medical University of Vienna; the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz and Humboldt University Library in Berlin; the Public and Medical Libraries at the University of Basel; and the Central Medical Library in Trieste. I thank the staff members of all of these institutions for their courtesy. It is an honor to have succeeded Professor Jan van Gijn of Utrecht University, who founded the “Pioneers in Neurology” section of the Journal of Neurology in 2000 and edited it through 2013, and Professor Andrew J. Larner of the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Liverpool, who ran it from 2013 to 2021, as acquisition editor. I express my gratitude to both; their guidance over the years has been invaluable. In general, I followed the format of “Pioneers” in the present book, adding a second figure, and occasionally allowing myself 1,500 words and up to 15 references. I gratefully acknowledge Lilith Dorko and Megan McManus, my publishing edi- tors in New York, Brian P. Halm, book production manager, Lavanya Devgun, senior editorial assistant, and Cynthya Pushparaj, project coordinator at Springer Nature, who I have had the pleasure of working with to bring this project to fruition.
