Forthosewhowere fortunate enough to know Vicki lifewill never be the same. I firstmether in Sydney in 1981, when I was starting to put pen to paper. She was at this time a prolific journalist for many top women's magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, NatureandHealth and Woman'sDayandwrote with such panache and enthusiasm that one could always recognize the typical stamp ofa Petersen article. Shehadwrittenseveralinternationallybest-sellingbooks, includ- ing WholeFoodCatalogue,EatTour Way toHealth, Strategiesofthe Champions, Food Combining and a travel book on Australia, and had so many plans to write future books on health and well-being. The next two offthe press were to be cookbooks called The Lean GreenMamma's Cookbook and BeHappyNotHungry. Whoever would have thought that this brilliant and powerful woman was to become a victim ofanorexia nervosa. It came as a huge shock to all who knew and read her when she died in one ofSydney's public hospitals on August 29, 1992, with kidney and liver failure as a result ofmalnutrition. It is a tragedy that it takes the untimely death ofsuch a tremen- dous woman as Vicki Petersen to bring home the message that we need to do more to help women with eating disorders.
