Over the centuries, it has been proven to be efficacious and has provided cures for both acute diseases and chronic illnesses. It is still practised widely in China and Chinese communities all over the world, including localities where Western medicine is the mainstream of medical practice, such as in HongKong. In Western countries, many people have heard of traditional Chinese medicine, but generally only in regard to acupuncture, which has been used to a small degree in the West in recent decades. Herbal medicine has also become increasingly interesting to Westerners who wish to take fewer pills and have more control over their own health care. However, these two areas are only apartofTCM, and do not explain the theoretical basis behind it, or how it actually works. This book attempts to introduce the general reader to the fundamental concepts and workings of TCM in a way that the layman can easilyunderstand. TCM has agreatdeal to offer to the Western world. Although some of the ideas may be quite foreign, TCM is without doubt worthy of attention, study and research. We hope that this book will help readers see the enormous contributions that can be made by TCM, and will bring people to a greater understandingofthe Chinese view ofmedicine and healing.
