I travel constantly – always looking, always learning. The other key component for me when it comes to under- standing Asia is to have a strong network of good friends and associates who, by passing on ideas or simply by supplying anecdotes in the course of conversation, help not only to deepen my understanding of Asia but to enliven it. Among those who have provided ideas and anecdotes that I have used in this book are Raymond Yee, Eric Pringle, Joni Djuanda, Cherie Nur- salim, Yau Su Peng, Peter Hendy, Jennifer Gee, Alistair Nicholas, Jeffrey Tan, Sandra Chia, Daryl Kennedy, Sandrine Westcott, Anne Richter, Piers Brunner, Justin Doebele, Shabanji Opukah, Gabriella Tuason Quimson, Ritchie Ramesh, Zaman Tambu, Vijya Patel and Zhang Qiang. And to Eddie Chin, thank you for your ideas and your insights. There’s more here because of your influence than you will realise! Thank you to Stephen Rutt, my commissioning editor at Palgrave Macmillan. Stephen thinks in terms of authors as well as products and so is always keen to know what I’m going to write next. On top of that he’s gracious and unflappable despite all my attempts to prove otherwise. Thanks also to Steve Maginn, head of Palgrave Macmillan’s Hong Kong office and a true Asian Insider, for his ideas and for his directness which saves time, and to Keren Cheung and Regina Chan who work hard even by Hong Kong’s outrageous standards. vii Acknowledgements viii Finally, thank you to the team at Aardvark Editorial for their copy- editing work. There’s a lot to be said for those who know that Bodhisattva has only one ‘d’. Every effort has been made to trace all the copyright holders but if any have been inadvertently overlooked the publishers will be pleased to make the necessary arrangements at the first opportunity.
