THE ARJ Of POTTEK BEATRIX With Introductory JVotes to each Section by EMD AND LESLIE LJJ^DER^ . Beatrix Potter is known and loved for her children's hooks; her Peter Rabbit series has delighted young and old for nian\ years, and will continue to do so for many- more This revised and enlarged edition reveals her greatness as an artist, and in some measure explains the secret ofher charm. Leslie Linder, recognised throughout the world as the authority on Beatrix Potter, has included many new reproductions of her art in this volume, and he and his sister Enid haveprefaced each sectionwith introductory notes which tell the history ofher pictures and trace the development of her work as a writer and illustrator of children's hooks. From her earliest childhood Beatrix Potter was a lover of animals and nature, and from the age of eight this love was ex- pressed in her drawings and paintings. Some beautiful examples of her work as a child and in her teens are »iven in the opening section, followed by selections from her later work, under such headings as Interiors, Landscapes. Plant Studies. Microscopic Work, Fungi Drawings and Animal Studies. In the later sections there are animal fantasies, early ideas for illustrated books, and many ofthe original book drawings reproduced full size, thus enabling the beauty ofher fine detail work andcolouringto be appreciated. Because the miniature letters now appear in A History ofthe Writings ofBeatrix Potter. it has been thought fit to leave them out of this edition, in order to make room for the wealth of new material, much of which has never been published before. The volume contains over 300 reproductions in colour and monochrome. There is alsoacollection ofphotographsofHillTop and Sawrey which give the setting of BeatrixPotter'slifefrom 1905onwards.
