There were two of them, white, big, and fast. Fighting a dog is no big deal. The fact is that one swift, well-aimed kick ought to end your dog problem real fast. One swift, well-aimed kick almost cost me my leg. I didn’t see the spiked collar it wore, and I sliced open my left leg at midshin. The dog yelped as its ribs broke. It grunted as the air was forced from its lungs, and then it breathed no more. I looked at Truck and Doc. The other dog lay several yards in front of them, its head a darkened mess. My I hurried to Doc. leg gave out as I reached him. There was a lot of blood. It flowed from the four- inch-wide wounds in Doc’s chest, darkening matted fur. We stared at Doc’s body for a long time. Finally Truck looked at me. “No dream this me,” she signed, trilling softly. Her eyes narrowed and she stood. “Hate dreams me! Understand you?” “No, Truck. Understand no.” I She looked at Doc’s body, at the bodies of our two opponents, then at the two moons in the sky. Truck looked at me. “Understand you no,” she signed, and turned away. But a director is not the only person involved in the production of a—motion picture, and at the end of the film the credits roll and they ain't called "credits" for nothing Therefore I, as director of this book, am rolling credits at the begin- ning: Ken Mitchroney for visualization, Beth Mitchroney for llama-play,- Doyle Pope for miscellaneous verisimilitude,- Lisa Pianka, Larry Leker, and Nancy Lambert for cleaning and polishing, History of Science Professor Robert Hatch for conversations, extrapolations, and showing where to look for right answers, Stephen Jay Gould, Gene Bylinsky, and Carl Sagan for their lucid books on evolutionary theory and speculative evolution, Eugene Linden and Herbert Terrace for their books on communication with apes via Ameslan,- Diane Duane for three-body problems, the Florida Speleo- logical Society for anecdotes and information, and espe- cially: David Gerrold, for many kindnesses, Melissa Ann Singer, for editorial virtuosity, and — Jessie Horsting, for How Things Work and Why. Lastly should like to thank the coffee-plying staff of 1 Coco's in Northridge, California, without whose caffeine pushing could not have survived marly a hyperkinetic eve- I ning Interpolated into the manuscript are four brief, slightly altered essays wrote regarding the music of (in order of I appearance) Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, Brian Eno, and Peter Gabriel, and should like to acknowledge their I wonderful music for the imagery it has provided. —SB—
