About the Authors
Rob Brown is Director of the Bournemouth University Approved Mental Health
Professionals course in South West England. He is also a Mental Health Act Commissioner
covering Dorset, and has been a member of the Commission since 1992. Rob previously
worked as a Mental Welfare Officer and then as an Approved Social Worker with
Hampshire County Council. He has been a lecturer at Southampton University, Stirling
University and Croydon College. He contributes to the training of section 12 approved
doctors and Approved Clinicians in South West England and Wales. Rob has published
widelyinthefieldofmentalhealthandmentalcapacitylaw.
Gwen Adshead is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist for West London Mental
HealthNHSTrustbasedatBroadmoorHighSecureHospital.DrAdsheadhasspecialisedin
forensic psychiatry, mental health law and trauma psychiatry since 1987. In addition to
being a practising clinician, she is also the author of several papers and book chapters,
regularlyteachesstudentsandlecturesatprofessionalconferences.Sheistheco-editorof
twojournals.
Alan Pollard is Chief Pharmacist at the Worcestershire Mental Health Partnership NHS
Trust.HehastaughtonASW(nowAMHP)coursesforseveralyears.Alanwasthesecretary
of the United Kingdom Psychiatric Pharmacy Group from 1999 to 2001. He has written a
number of papers as well as local protocols. He is currently involved with POMH-UK, the
Prescribing Observatory for Mental Health, a national initiative designed to improve pre-
scribing practice in specialist mental health services and to help local services to
implementandmonitorNICEguidance.
