Routledge Revivals The Anatomy of Drama This title, first published in 1960, is intended primarily to increase the understanding of drama among those who do not have easy access to the live theatre and who, therefore, study plays mainly in print. The author’s emphasis is on Shakespeare, but most forms of drama receive some attention. A lucid and lively study of the techniques of plot, dialogue and characterization will help the reader to a deeper appre- ciated of the problems and successes of the dramatist. Its aim is: to help the person with no access, or rare access, to the professionaltheatre, towardsaclearernotionofthefunction and nature ofdrama and a greaterenjoyment ofplays. It is intended especially for older schoolchildren, students and others who, for examination purposes, are obliged, not to seeplaysforpleasure, buttostudythetextofplaysindetail. This, as well as his genius, accountsfor thehighproportion of attention given to Shakespeare. I have tried, in fact, to write the book on drama that I wish I had read whenI was about fourteen. RelativelyfewpeopleinEnglandtodaycanseestageplays at all frequently. Such is our splendid library service, how ever, that hardly any literate person is unable to read as many plays as anyone may reasonably wish. This book is mostly for the reader of plays; it may, I hope, make the readingofplaysamoresatisfyingexperience-andthestudy ofset plays for examinations rather more meaningful.
