probably have been defeated by any
single modern warship of the day. It

was to take many years to re-build
the decimated American fleet; but, in
spite of factional disputes and politi-
cal bumbling, the Navy steadily rose
in strength and efficiency until, by
1922, it was second to none in the
world.
Written by an experienced naval
officer, Lt. Cdr. Brayton Harris, The
Age of the Battleship follows this
progress, highlighting many of the
controversial issues and personalities
along the way. These include the stra-
tegic and political questions posed by
the development of the battleship; the
dispute between the Army and the
Navy over the prosecution of the War
with Spain; and the bitter argument
between two admirals over the ques-
tion "Who was in command at the
Battle of Santiago?"; official reluc-
tance to adopt such revolutionary de-
velopments as the submarine and the
airplane; and political pressures on
the Navy not to prepare for entry into
World War
I.
Commander Harris has written a
dynamic study of a dynamic period in
the growth of the U.S. Navy and (he
nation itself.
