The Abu Dhabi Sustainable Lighting Policy
The Original Key Factors of Implementation
• Reduction of all Roadway and Pavement lighting levels and more targeted design
for both Roadway and Pavement lighting
• Parks and Public Realm projects designed with suitable lighting for long-term
efficiency and quality for the environment and people
• Specification of optically and energy efficient quality LED (and other low-energy
technology) with appropriate controls for all uses. Retrofit all existing street lighting
• Introduction of Emirate-specific Performance Benchmarking system for all external lighting
• Mandate & Enforce Policy including statutory illumination hierarchy and design guidance
for all external public lighting. Aligned with other AD documents e.g. supporting Estidama
• Strategy and all proposed steps approved by GSEC under Decree in April 2011

The Lighting Levels & Specifications have now been officially issued under DMA
Decree-39, April 2012 to cover the entire Emirate: All Municipalities, DoT, Developers,
Consultants, Contractors and Suppliers must adhere to the criteria for public projects

• Request for unique solutions for project specific designs/looks
• Coordination with electrical services and component installation
• Push for optimisation and reduction in infrastructure where ever possible
• Façade and surface brightness tables
• Specifics on Maintenance Factors and their composition
Fixture Specification for Projects (DMA Specifications)

• LED/Conventional Fixture efficacy in AD environment
• LED Fixture thermal design
• LED Fixture testing performed at actual local AD maximum nighttime
temperatures/humidity, plus safety factor
