Like mat work, it is intended for gen eral readers as weH as for an academic audience. Hence I concentrate on Thackeray's texts farher than devote any extensive attention to what critics, including myself, have written abaut them. As in the first volume, I da not document all statements about Thackeray, assuming as I da general agree ment abaut the major facts of his life and abaut his basic outlook- agreement based upon the evidence of his correspondence and upon the findings of bio graphical studies. For assistance in preparing this volume I am very much indebted, as usual, to the computing ex pertise of Anita Mahoney of the Dean of Arts office, Simon Fraser University.
