THE MEDIAEVAL ACADEMY OF AMERICA PUBLICATION NO. 68 TEXT AND ICONOGRAPHY FOR JOINVILLE'S CREDO TEXT AND ICONOGRAPHY FOR JOINVILLE'S CREDO LIONEL J. FRIEDMAN Indiana University THE MEDIAEVAL ACADEMY OF AMERICA CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS 1958 © COPYRIGHT BY THE MEDIAEVAL ACADEMY OF AMERICA 1958 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CATALOG CARD NUMBER: 58-7918 PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY THE CRIMSON PRINTING COMPANY, CAMBRIDGE, MASS. TABLE OF CONTENTS PREFACE ix TEXT AND ICONOGRAPY FOR JOINVILLE'S CREDO 1 LI ROMANS AS YMAGES DES POINZ DE NOSTRE FOI . . .. 29 COMMENTARY 53 PLATES I-XXII 83 PREFACE The history of the fate of Joinville's Credo, first produced some seven hundred and seven years ago, is still not entirely known. It is quite evident that the initial appearance of the work required the joint effort of author, scribe, and illuminator, yet the first of these gives us no information concerning the others. Nor is the only extant manuscript more revelatory of those responsible for its creation. Present custom holds otherwise. First to be acknowledged and thanked is the Mediaeval Academy of America and its conscientious editors, Mr. C. R. D. Miller and Mr. Van Courtlandt Elliott for help offered and care taken. Thanks, too, are due the Bibliotheque nationale and the Public Library of Leningrad for their transmission for publication of the documents so preciously preserved by them. Acknowledgment of gratitude must also be made to The Meriden Gravure Company and the Crimson Printing Company for the ma- terial execution of the work. Whatever the changes in customs between the age of Saint Louis and our own, certain virtues have remained constant. In consequence, another's modesty requires that I give only anonymous public re- cognition to his interest in the arts and that generosity which has made this publication possible. LIONEL J. FRIEDMAN TO A. J. F. IN MEMORY OF M. H. F.
