Despite thechallengespresentedbythe national, state and local economic crises, the School of Pharmacy persevered with its missiontoenhance health through innovative pharmaceutical education, research, practice, and public service. With that mission continuallyinmind,theSchoolimplementedarevised andenhancedcurriculuminAugust2009thatpromises to prepare our students for the expanding scope of pharmacy practice. This new curriculum was developedoverfouryearswithinputfromfaculty,staff, preceptors, and our students. Even after its implementation, we continued to refine the content based on feedback from our students. It is with your input that we are able to offer a top 10 pharmacy education. Yourexperiencesatthe SchoolofPharmacyextendbeyondtheclassroomandlabsintopracticesites and the community. I continue to be amazed at the dedication our PharmD and graduate students show to communityservice,projectsthatnotonlyspreadthewordaboutthepharmacyandpharmaceuticalsciences professionsbutthatalsoprovidehands-oncareforpatients.Inthe2009-2010academicyear,ourstudents dedicatedthousandsofhourstocommunityservice, immunizationclinicsandhealthcarereformseminars, tutoring programs for local school children, fundraisers for charities and organizations, health fairs and lectures on timely pharmacy-related topics. The list goes on and on. You should be very proud ofthe mark you are making on the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus and on the larger Baltimore community. The experience you have juggling classes, studying, working and donating your time and energies to worthy causes will serve you well as a pharmacy practitioner orresearcher. The demands for yourtime will be great out there in the "real world," but I feel confident that the School's top-notch faculty, staff andpreceptorshavepreparedyouwelltohandlethosedemands whileprovidingyouwiththeknowledge and skills to be leaders in and advocates forourprofession. Along with multiple lecture halls and study rooms, the new addition [eludes several research labs and a state-of-the-art dispensing laboratory with pace for students to practice patient counseling.
