Giovanni Di Giacomo Todd S. Ellenbecker W. Ben Kibler Editors Tennis Medicine A Complete Guide to Evaluation, Treatment, and Rehabilitation 123 Tennis Medicine “In my career, I have witnessed firsthand the key role that sports medicine has had in both treating the injuries that I have had and preventing further injuries from occurring. I am very happy that a book edited by Dr. Di Giacomo, Todd S. Ellenbecker from ATP, and Dr. Kibler has been developed to further the methods and education for sports medicine professionals who work with tennis players to enhance their performance and prevent injuries. The ability to have a long and extended career is very important to all players and the advances in sports medicine are allowing this to happen for many players throughout the sport of tennis. I have always worked closely with my entire team including my doctors and physios who have assisted me in my career and for whom I am very thankful for their great work.” —Rafael NADAL Giovanni Di Giacomo Todd S. We are thankful to all the authors who gave their time and expertise to this book and for the countless players whom we have treated and examined that have led us to this project to enhance Tennis Medicine by all who practice it. Special mention to Sonia Errera for her conscientious effort in coordinating the project. We also dedicate this book to an unbelievable friend and truly respected colleague in Tennis Medicine—Dr. Javier Maquirrian, who died earlier this year. We would also like to acknowledge the commitment and insight of Elisa Geranio who assisted in the initial development of the book and also died earlier this year. Foreword This book highlights the key role sports medicine and sport science play in the sport of tennis. As a former player, tournament director, and now an Executive Chairman & President of the ATP, I have witnessed first-hand the important role Medical Services plays in elite-level tennis. I have benefited from the treatments and evaluations provided to me while playing that both prevented further injury and allowed me to return to play. I have also worked with tournament physicians, physios, and massage therapists while serving as the Tournament Director for the ATP tournament at the Queen’s Club in London, as well as the ATP Finals at the O2, for many years. The role they play in facilitating player health and recovery, as well as injury and illness management, is critical to the success of any tournament. Lastly, in my role with the ATP, we have developed an extensive Medical Services department providing critically important sports medicine and recovery care to our play- ers on both the ATP World Tour and ATP Challenger Tour. It is hoped that the information provided in this book by Di Giacomo, Ellenbecker, and Kibler will advance the clinical knowledge of clinicians who work with tennis play- ers and lead to continued improvements in player care.
