INTRODUCTION LENCIONI (2004) listed nine species of Telagrion, seven from Brazil, when he described T. nathaliae.Thenewspecies describedherein brings thetotal de- scribedspecies to 10. Thelarva isunknownas withall speciesof Telagrion. The genus Telagrion isrecordedfromBoliviaforthefirst time. TELAGRION BOLIVIENSIS SP.NOV. Etymology. —The speciesisnamedforthecountryofBolivia where itwasfirstfoundbythe author. MALE(holotype). — Head. — Eyesinlifebrowndorsally,palebrownventrally witha darklateralstripe separating thetwo colorzones. Labrum,mandible, and genaelightbrownwithafaintbluish tinge. Face, vertex, andepicranium brown withgolden reflections. Antennaelightbrownwithtop ofsegment 3black. Re- maining segmentsmissingin bothantennae. Rearof headbrown. Thorax. — Pronotumbrown, propleuron lightbrown. Middorsalthorac- ic carinabrown. Thorax uniformlybrown, lighter towardspale venter (Fig. 1). Mesopleuralandmetapleural fossaeblackish-brown. Interpleural andmetapleu- ralsutures withabrownspotbasally. Legs. - Armatureblack; coxaeandlegs palebrown. Wings. — Flavescent/tawny withbrownvenation.15/16postnodal crossveins inforewings, 14/15hindwings. Brownpterostigma overlies 1 cellwiththe proxi- mal sideoblique. Abdomen.— Mostlybrownwithfaintreddishtinges dorsallybecoming light- erventrallywithtinypalebasalringsandcomplete darkerapicalrings. Segments 1 and2brown.Segments 3-6withpale basalringandwiderdarkapical ring.Asmall Figs 1-4. Telagrionboliviensissp.n. 293 pale area precedes the apical ring. Segments7-9brown, darkerventral- ly. Segment 10brown.Appendages brown with reddish reflections. In lateral view, cercus broad narrow- ing slightly to roundedapex (Fig. 2). Cercus roundly curved basally into small blunt projection. Para- proctabouthalfaslongascercus. In dorsalview, cercus fairly uniformly straight and narrowing slightly to apex(Fig. 3). Measurements (mm). - Total lengthincludingappendages43.5,abdomen 36,3,forewing22.5 andhindwing22.5. FEMALE(allotype). — Homochro- matic,almostidenticalto holotype male. Head. — Similar to male. Both blackish-brown antennae in- tact. Thorax. — Similartomale.The four thoracic suture spots slightly Figs5-7. Wings. - Tawny, light brown wings similar to holotype but 16 postnodal crossveins in forewing and 14/15 postnodal crossveins in hindwings. Abdomen.— Light brown. Segment 8 withoutventral spine. Ovipositor pale brown, genitalvalvewithminute,even dentition(Fig. 4).Stylus lightbrown withyellow tip. Browncercus darkeratapex. Measurements (mm). - Totallengthincludingappendages38.0,abdomen31.0,forewing 24.5 andhindwing24.0. VARIATIONAMONGPARATYPES. — Paratypes similartoholotypeandallotype. Total length (mm) of 6 rangesfrom 43-48, 9 45-50; abdomen<J 35-39, 9 36- 40; forewing 6 22-26, 9 25-29; hindwing d 21-25and 9 24-28.Postnodalcross- veinsinforewing d 15-16,9 14-17andhindwing d 13-15,9 13-14.Lateraland oblique-posterior viewsofa paratypemale as inFigures 5-6. DIAGNOSIS Theflavescent/brownish wings willimmediately separate Telagrion boliviensis malesandfemalesfromallknown Telagrion species as they havehyaline wings. 294 J.J. Daigle Also, theshort cercus andparaproctare almostthesame length in T. oreasRis (Colombia) and T. quadricolor Ris (Peru), whereasthecerciarealmost twiceas longas theparaprocts inT. boliviensis. Thestraight andparallel-sided cerciwill separate T. boliviensisfromT. cornicaudaCalvert, T.macilentumRambur, T.na- thaliaeLencioni, T.moureiSantos, andT.longumSelyswhichhavedecurvedcerci. T.dicerasSelyshasmesothoracichorns,whicharelacking inT.boliviensisandall otherTelagrion species. A single femalein IRSNB inpoorconditionrepresents thepoorly known T.fulvellum Selys species. Photosof this specimen by Jerome Constantshow that itappearsto bemuchsmaller in size than T. boliviensisfe- malesandthatitis notconspecihc. Telebasisboliviensiscommonly inhabitslakes ingrassland andopenpastures thatare mostly surroundedby marginal forest. Immatureadults remain in the forestunderbrushduring the dryseason. Thedarkermature adultsreturn to the lakes at theadventofthe rainy seasonto breed.Odonatespecies collectedwith T. boliviensisincludeTelebasisgigantea Daigle, and Lestesjurzitzai Muzon. At leastone ofthree specimens that havebeentaken atthe Tambopata Reserve in Peruwas inthe middleof primary forest, along way fromany openarea. They werecollectedthere only during the rainyseason, andnonewas foundduring a month-longvisit inthe dryseason(D. R. Paulson, pers.comm.). T.boliviensisshowsabehaviordescribedbyLENCIONI (2006, p. 30), “...open andclosetheirwings once ortwiceafteralighting”,andas statedby him,as far as heknows, this behavioralcharacteristicis sharedonly withArgiaspecies.
