IFIP is a non-profitmakingorganization,run almost solely by 2500 volunteers. It operatesthrougha numberoftechnicalcommittees,whichorganizeeventsandpubli- cations. IFIP’s events range from an international congress to local seminars, but the mostimportantare: (cid:129) TheIFIPWorldComputerCongress,heldeverysecondyear; (cid:129) Openconferences; (cid:129) Workingconferences. TheflagshipeventistheIFIPWorldComputerCongress,atwhichbothinvitedand contributed papers are presented. Contributed papers are rigorously refereed and the rejectionrateishigh. AswiththeCongress,participationintheopenconferencesisopentoallandpapers maybeinvitedorsubmitted.Again,submittedpapersarestringentlyrefereed. Theworkingconferencesarestructureddifferently.Theyareusuallyrunbyawork- inggroupandattendanceissmallandbyinvitationonly.Theirpurposeistocreatean atmosphereconducivetoinnovationanddevelopment.Refereeingisalsorigorousand papersaresubjectedtoextensivegroupdiscussion. PublicationsarisingfromIFIPeventsvary.ThepaperspresentedattheIFIPWorld ComputerCongressandatopenconferencesarepublishedasconferenceproceedings, while the results of the workingconferencesare often publishedas collections of se- lectedandeditedpapers. Any nationalsociety whose primaryactivity is aboutinformationprocessingmay applyto becomea fullmemberofIFIP, althoughfullmembershipis restrictedto one societypercountry.FullmembersareentitledtovoteattheannualGeneralAssembly, Nationalsocietiespreferringalesscommittedinvolvementmayapplyforassociateor correspondingmembership.Associate membersenjoy the same benefitsas fullmem- bers, but without voting rights. Corresponding members are not represented in IFIP bodies.Affiliatedmembershipisopentonon-nationalsocieties,andindividualandhon- orarymembershipschemesarealsooffered. Potentialbenefitscanbefoundinallengineeringfieldsandatalllevels,e.g., supportingmanagement,operation,andservicesprovisioninsmallandmediumenter- prises, facilitating high-levelsensorialperceptionbasedon sensor networkswith lim- itedlocalintelligence,supportingmonitoring,anddiagnosisofamachinewithlimited computerpower,etc. This approach is changing the way engineeringsystems are designed, giving rise to new subareas such as the so-called cloud manufacturing,while leading to exciting challengesforresearchersandindustrialpractitioners.Insteadoftryingtoincreaselocal computational resources at the level of each component/ subsystem, which in some cases might be technically difficult, the efforts can be channeled to give connectivity and communicationcapabilitiesto suchcomponents,connectingthem to “thecloud”. Asaresult,notonlyelasticityandmorerobustsecuritymechanismsmaybeacquired, but also wider access to larger pools of resources available on the Internet, opening the opportunity for the development of higher value-added services. Furthermore, it also challengessystemsengineersto payattentionto theunderlyingbusinessmodels, securityconcerns,anduseracceptabilityaspects. TheDoCEISseriesofadvanceddoctoralconferencesonComputing,Electricaland IndustrialSystemsaimsatcreatingaspaceforsharinganddiscussingideasandresults from doctoral research in these interrelated areas of engineering, while promoting a strongmultidisciplinarydialog.Assuch,participantswerechallengedto lookbeyond theirspecificresearchquestionandrelatetheirworktotheselectedthemeofthecon- ference, namely to identify in which ways their research topics can benefit from, or contribute to cloud-basedsolutions. Currenttrends in strategic research programsare confirmingthefundamentalroleofmultidisciplinaryandinterdisciplinaryapproaches in innovation.Asa matteroffact,moreandmorefundingagenciesare includingthis elementasakeyrequirementintheircallsforproposals.Insuchaway,the“exercise” requested by DoCEIS can be seen as a contribution to the process of acquiring such skills,whicharemandatoryintheprofessionofaPhD.
