Duringtheyearof1846,theUnitedStatesannexedNewMexicoasaterritory, admittedIowa asthe29thstateintheUnion,anddeclaredwaronMexico. Electricarclightingwas introducedinParis, andEliasHoweinAmericapatentedthesewingmachine. JohnDeere constructedthefirstplowwithasteelmoldboard. Duringthesameyear, anAmericandentist W. T. Mortonintroducedetherasananesthetic. Intheliteraryworld,HenryWadsworth Longfellowpublished"TheBelfiyofBruges"andHermanMelvillepublished"Typee."In London, CharlesDickensintroducedthefirstcheapEnglishnewspaper,theDailyNews, and theEvangelicalAlliancewasfounded. InIrelandthefailureofthepotatocropcauseda famine, whichwouldsendthousandsofIrishimmigrantstoAmerica.A'soin 1846,the SmithsonianInstitutewasestablishedinWashingtonD.C., andcertainpoliticalandreligious movementsinAmericagainedmomentuminadvocatingtheemancipationofblackslaves andpromotingexpandedrightsforwomen. Forgedinthefireofintensereligiousbeliefs,TaylorUniversitywasdestinedtobecomeone oftheoldestevangelical ChristiancollegesinAmerica. Conceptualizedwiththeconviction thatwomenaswell asmenshouldhaveanopportunityforhighereducation,Taylor UniversitybeganasFortWayneFemaleCollegeinFortWayne, Indiana, andthenbecame FortWayneCollege. FollowingtheexampleofOberlinCollege(whichbecamethefirst coeducationalcollegeinAmericaandthefirsttoawardcollegedegreestowomenin 1841), FortWayneCollegebecamecoeducafional in 1855. In 1890,theschoolmergedwiththeFort WayneCollegeofMedicineandchangeditsnametoTaylorUniversityinhonorofBishop WilliamTaylor. In 1893,becauseofthepopulationboominthecentralpartofthestate, TaylorUniversitymovedtoUpland, Indiana.Nearly 100yearslaterin 1992,Taylor UniversityreestablisheditspresenceinFortWaynebyacquiringSummitChristianCollege. (Summithadstartedin 1895 withthe sponsorshipoftheMissionaryChurchAssociationand thespiritual leadershipofJosephP. RamseyerandDanielY. Schultz.) Since 1992, Taylor UniversityhasoperatedtwocampusesinIndiana: TaylorUniversityUplandandTaylor UniversityFortWayne. BishopWilliamTaylorbecameasymbolofthevaluesandidealsofthecollege. William Taylorwasanenergeficmissionaryevangelistpossessedwithunusualvitalityofcommitment anddevotion. Hisvoluminouswritings, includingmanybooksonpreachingandmissionsand extensiveworldwidemissionaryendeavors,resultedinhisbeingthefirstlaypastortobe namedaBishopoftheMethodistChurch. Withthisheritage. TaylorUniversityenteredthetwentiethcentury. TaylorUniversity's historian.Dr. WilliamRingenberg,noted,"Theintellectualrevolutionattheturnofthe centurycrackedthespiritualfoundationsofmajoruniversities" inAmericabychallenging theroleoftheChristianworldview. "This, coupledwiththedehumanizingofeducation"and theunrestcausedby"theinabilityofseculareducationtoguidestudentsintheirquestfor meaning"helpedtofurthershape, strengthen, anddefineTaylor'sChristianeducational mission. For 157years,Taylorhasbeenfaithfiiltothatmission. Asweenterthenextmillennium,theinstitution'sadministration,faculty, staff, andstudents standcommittedtoourheritageofChristiancommitmentandacademicexcellence. TheTaylorUniversityUplandstudent bodyofover 1,875 isdividedalmostequallybetweenmen andwomenwhocome from almosteverystateandover30foreigncountries. Taylorisdistinctiveinitscommitmenttoboth spiritualandintellectual developmentas symbolizedbythetwin spiresoftheRiceBell Tower. Thecarillonbells, giveninhonorof BarbaraGentile, remindthecampuscommunityofitsdualmissionthroughouttheday. AcademicpursuitsatTaylorarerigorous, demandingimagination,dedication, and integrity frombothstudentsandfaculty. AsaChristian institution, TaylorUniversityhasconcerned, competentfacultywhorecognizethatalltruthhasitssource inGod. Thestudents' questfor truthbeginswiththisconvictionandrelatestoall aspectsofthe liberalartscurriculum. TheUplandcampusofTaylorUniversityconsistsofapproximately250acreslocatedonthe southsideofthetown ofUpland, Indiana. Uplandis situatedfivemileseastof1-69, fifty miles southofFortWayne, andseventymilesnorth ofIndianapolis. Sixteenmajorbuildings havebeenaddedtotheUplandcampus since 1965. Majorremodelingandrestorationofother facilitiescontinuestotakeplacein ordertoachievemaximumutilizationandquality maintenance. Mission and Purposes (Revised2004) TaylorUniversityisaChrist-centerededucational institution, andanevangelical, interdenominational covenantcommunitycommittedto advancinglife-longlearning andministeringtheredemptive loveofJesusChristtoaworld inneed. Participation inthe universitycommunityisbasedonthefoundationofourcommitmenttotheLordship ofJesus Christ. TogetherweseektohonorHimbyintegratingfaithandlearningwhileourheartsand livesreflecttheprocessofmaturinginChrist. Thepurposeofthiscovenantisto identifytheexpectationsforparticipationinour communitythatassistus inlivingtogetherandinmeetinginstitutionalobjectives. We acknowledgethatitis impossibletocreateacommunitywithexpectationsthataretotally acceptabletoeverymember.Nevertheless, certain expectationsmustbespecifiedto assure orderlycommunitylife. When individualsjointheTaylorcommunity, theyfi^eelyand willinglychoosetotakeuponthemselvestheresponsibilitiesoutlined inthiscovenant. Assumptions CommunitylifeatTaylorUniversityisbaseduponthefollowingbeliefs: 1 LovingGodandbeingaccountabletoHimaretheprimarymotivationsforChristian relationshipsandbehavior. 2. TheBibleisourauthority; itprovidestheessentialteachingsandprinciplesforpersonal andcommunityconduct. 3. God, throughtheHoly Spirit, places in everybelievertheinnerresourcesandattributesto ministertoothersthrough supportiverelationships. ResponsibilitiesforRelationships Livingin daily fellowshipwithotherChristiansisaprivilegeandanexpressionofGod's grace. Inrecognitionofthisprivilege, greatvalue isplacedonthequalityofrelationshipsin ourcommunity. Weacknowledgethatweare livingin afellowshipwherewearedependent onandaccountabletooneanother. TheNewTestamentwordforfellowship iskoinonia. Itis translatedaspartaker, communion, communication, contribution, ordistribution. Members, therefore, areencouragedto seekasmanyopportunitiesaspossibletodemonstratekoinonia. Within ourcommunity,thegreatestexpressionoffellowship andthehighestprinciplefor relationshipsislove. As Scripturestates: Weshouldlove oneanother. Thisishowweknow whatlove is:JesusChristlaiddownHislifeforus.Andweoughttolaydownourlivesfor ourbrothers. . . letusnotlovewithwordsortonguebutwithactionsandintruth. Since God solovedus, wealsooughttoloveoneanother. WhoeverlovesGodmustalsolovehisbrother (IJohn3:11, 16, 18; IJohn4:11, 21 NIV). Forthepurposeofourcommunitywehave identifiedthefollowingspecific expressionsof loveasbeingamongthemostdesirableinourrelationships. Edification Weexpecteachmemberofthecommunityto striveconsciouslytomaintainrelationshipsthat support, encourage, andhelpothers. Accordingto Scripture: Wewhoarestrongoughtto bearwiththefailingsoftheweakandnottoplease ourselves. Eachofusshouldpleasehis neighborforhisgood, tobuildhim up (Romans 15:1-2NIV).
