In addition, its text derives from a single manuscript — the codex Arethae Parisinus gr. 451, dated A. D. 913 — 914 (= A). Now, the portion of A comprising Tatian is lost, and we have to rely on three old apographs of A — M VP. They attest to the fact that the text of Tatian was heavily lacunose and corrupt already in A. Back in 1888, Eduard Schwartz, greatly assisted by Wilamowitz, pre- pared a first critical edition of the Oratio. Unfortunately, Schwartz and Wilamowitz have not gone the full distance (that is why Schwartz was forced to disavow his own emendations in the Preface, pp. VII —IX). The present edition picks up where Schwartz and Wilamowitz had left off. Under the circumstances, I am confident that the reader is now provided with a reasonably reliable text (thanks to a Quellenforschung of Tatian, in the first place). The edition is dedicated to the memory of my teacher at the University of Belgrade (1937-1942), VESSELIN TCHAIKANOVITCH (1881 — 1946), a great scholar in comparative religion. Urbana, Spring 1995 M.
