Legislate to eradicate seemai karuvelam: High
Court
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the State
government to enact a special legislation with prohibitory and penal clauses
for eradicating seemai karuvelam (prosopis juliflora) —
an invasive species of tree considered harmful to the environment — from
public and private lands alike.
Seemai Karuvelam tree species are native to West Africa. It was brought to
Tamil Nadu in 1960s as fuelwood.
