Almost all of the instruments which were operated during the International Geophysical Year have been continued through the IGC. A detailed description of the instruments1,2 and experimental observations are printed in the Cosmic Ray IGY volume No. XXVI and XXVII. Again it is a pleasure to thank the many scientific investigators who have contributed to the present volume of data through the period 1959. The staff of World Data Center A prepared the data for publication in this volume, and special thanks go to Dr. Paul J. Kellogg and Mrs. Constance Lane for this effort. J. A. SIMPSON CSAGI Reporter for Cosmic Rays Chicago 1 Standard Meson Intensity Recorder, H. Elliot, Annals of the IG Y, Vol. IV, Parts I, II, and III, p. 374-393, Pergamon Press, London (1958). 2 Cosmic Radiation Neutron Intensity Monitor, J. A. Simpson, Annals of the IGY, Vol. IV, Parts I, II and III, p. 351-373, Pergamon Press, London (1958). vii INTRODUCTION Le programme international pour les experiences et les mesures permanen- tes des rayons cosmiques, qui a ete commence au debut de l'Annee Geophysique Internationale, a ete prolonge pendant l'annee 1959, periode de Cooperation Geophysique Internationale. Elliot, Standard Meson Intensity Recorder, IGY Annals 4, 374-393, 1958 1 J. A. Simpson, Cosmic Radiation Intensity Monitor, IGY Annals 4, 351—373, 1958 ix EXPLANATION OF IGC DATA TABLES In order to prepare the data on the following pages for publication the data were first put on punched cards and then checked for correctness essentially by repunching. These procedures should minimize errors of transcription and also facilitate some computations which have been made with some of the data. Tabulating machines were then used to print the data on standard forms and the data were photographed for reproduction. As a further insurance against errors, carbon copies of the data sheets were sent to all investigators to be checked. The data marked as verified in the table of contents have been returned to the data center and the corrections made. Once the data were on punched cards it was easy to perform a number of computations, but the machine used for these calculations has a simple logic and so certain restrictions should be noted. Daily totals have been supplied for most of the data when these were not supplied by the investigator himself. No corrections were made, however, for missing bihourly values. In a few cases the data in our files consist of hourly values and these were added together to get the bihourly values published here. Again, no correction was made for cases where one of two hourly values was missing, but these cases will be obvious. Since pressure changes have a greater effect on neutron monitors than cosmic ray variations do, it was felt necessary to correct all neutron monitor data for pressure in cases where this had not been done by the investigator himself. The only exceptions were cases where the pressure data was not available to the data center. No corrections were made by the data center to telescope and ion chamber data; these data are published as received at the data center. The symbols used in the table headings are : NM — neutron monitor I — ion chamber T — cubical telescope UT — underground telescope T* — vertical telescope S — shower apparatus LOCATIONS : Latitude and longitude are given in degrees and decimal fractions of a degree. TIME : All times are Universal Time (UT) except as otherwise noted. In the body of the table an asterisk (*) means that the accom- panying data is of reduced statistical accuracy because it was derived from part of the instrument or during part of the time interval. NOTES : NNootteess rreeffeeir enced in the tables are found on page xxv.
